DIY Hobby - How to make your own Wet Pallet for Tabletop hobby painting!

in #hive-1896412 years ago

Hello all! Recently I have been getting back into painting miniatures and my friend Ren brought his wet pallet to the hobby shop for me to use as he tutored me back into the swing of things.

I then determined that it would not be too difficult to make my own!

Hey there, I am Zak Ludick from Cape Town South Africa. I am a Warhammer and tabletop enthusiast but besides a small handful of well-painted miniatures, I have been pretty bad at getting around to painting my minis.

I own a lot of second-hand models that need to be repainted and have built and unbuilt brand-new models I need to paint. Perhaps by posting about them on Hive I will be more target driven to get painting!

But first I need a wet pallet. To be able to keep the paint from drying out and even pick it up on your next session is pretty cool!

You will need:

  • A container that can hold water - I got a plastic container.
  • An absorbent material. Foam would do but I got some felt sheets.
  • Baking paper

That's it!

Have a look at how easy this is!

These are the only things I needed to buy.

The container cost R7.50, approx $0.44!

The felt sheets cost R39.99, approx $2.30. I will only be using 2 out of 5 of these sheets so I will be able to make another should I ever need to, or I will use the material for something else.

Don't forget baking paper as your top layer!

Simply cut the felt into pieces that fit the container, I could get 2x layers per sheet.

Test fit during and after cutting!

I cut two pieces up, giving me 4 layers.

Finally, get a piece of baking paper to the same size. Wet the felt (or other absorbent material) and then place the baking paper on top.

DONE!

Testing in use!

So I started using the pallet to paint some zombies. Since these are civillians turned zombie I need to paint them all differently, but I can do 5 at a time with some sort of main color and decided to do the following:

And here you can see the blip of paint on the baking paper. I can now close up the lid of the container and go serve supper and come back to it later! Awesome!

Thank you for reading!

Cheers!

Nice 😀 If you want an even cheaper source of containers (although it may be just a UK thing), all the Chinese takeaways around here use plastic containers with clip on plastic lids. They're thoroughly re-usable, and a lot cheaper than tupperware.

lol, great idea!

Yeah the container was really cheap. The felt costs more. I could actually have made another wet pallet for another $0.44 with the materials I have left over. Maybe two more.

That's a good idea, I think I need to make a dedicated spot in my shed, so I could leave stuff all set up. I don't have an warhammer thing yet but might have a look around to see what available near me. I do have some old miniature soldiers and paint stashed away in some cupboards. They haven't been out since my son was a boy. The paint in those small tins probably gone rock hard, could be a nice little project for a rainy day. I joined a splinterlands guild got my first battles later today. Any tips? I have no idea how things work inside these guilds. Hopefully it's straight forward and the other team members do seem helpful.

Great Brad. For the hobby stuff you can google around your area to see if there are hobby shops nearby. Usually if you are in a City, you will find a GW store or some other hobby shop.

Depending on what kinds of paints they are, some can be revived. I have revived some seriously old paints and the other hobby guys thought I was crazy... but I have power tools and the others are mixing by hand. I made a plan hahaha!

As for Splinterlands and having a Brawl. It is your first one so just go out there and battle hard! They need to give you some time to collect enough Merits so you can buy a Gladius pack and get your first Gladiators! You might have been collecting some merits in reward chests but I don't know if you would have managed to collect 2000 of them?

found the info in the splinterlands help section, I just need to read and click around more. !LOL

I am so close to my first one, I think

Nice!!!

You are going to love Galdiators. They all have Bloodlust.

You can only use one at a time!

Where do I see my total merits? I can only see credits, SPS, Dec. I think I have been giving a few in daily chests.

Check in Items and on the Other tab. You'll see them there.

Otherwise in the shop, go to Guild, where you buy Guild packs, it will show you there. You will need 2000 for a Gladius pack.
