Many years back I made a sowing room for my seeds, this would allow me to start seeds for vegetables way before the frosts end. And I could get a jump on the growing season starting plants in this room and then move them outside around April once the risk of frost has ended.
Unfortunately I had to stop using this room for many years, as we needed more space for the cats that live with us. So the room was mostly theirs. But now the room is for me to use again and I put my Thyme plants in there, and plan on starting a bunch of seeds for next years growing season.
I had fun putting a sign up, its just a joke. All I use are fluorescent tubes.
Ah I really missed seeing the light escape through the vent, has a cool look to it.
There are three levels to my grow room. The middle is where most of my seeds will be started.
Below is a good place for when they get taller, as I can raise the light a good three feet or so. But Thyme will never get that big, but maybe other plants will. The room was too narrow for both of my lights so I had to offset them to fit. I will upgrade to LEDs once I go through all my tubes.
The Thyme in water is growing at the bottom, they seem okay. But any time I move them they fall in and I have to save them or they will rot.
I got my second phase of Thyme seedlings coming up, waiting for them to get big and strong and then they can go into a pot.
The lights also help to dry out old soil, this box had seeds that have now been moved since they sprouted and got strong enough for their own cells.
At the top of the room I have some cuttings, while I was planting Mountain Laurel in my yard some branches broke off. So I am attempting to get them to root so I have more plants.
A fan is installed in this room as well, I can use it to stimulate the stems of plants. Blowing air on them will encourage the stems to get stronger to support their swaying from the air flow.
Just using a normal dual fan air circulator.
Something I made years back, I had major gnat problems growing plants indoors. But since then I have learned about neem oil and they knock them right out. These fans are painted with fluorescent spray paint, and behind them are UV lights. My plan was to attract the gnats to the fans, get sucked out of the room and then stop the problem. It worked a little, but adding neem oil to my water is the best way to deal with them now.
Mylar is the material coating these walls, it works better than aluminum foil and will help me get the most light to everywhere in the room. They are a little dirty, cleaned them the best we could. But I think they will still work even if a little dirty.
