Adding more cabinets to the kitchen - staining the wood

in #home3 years ago

There is a four foot section of my kitchen that just has a wire shelf. I decided to buy a cabinet and countertop to get rid of current setup. With a countertop we will have a place to put more spices. The cabinet is pretty big so I think I should be able to fit everything in there. If not I will when I add the overhead cabinets later on.

Picking up this prefabbed cabinet from my local hardware store I bring it home.

Barely fit both the countertop and cabinet in my truck.. otherwise would have had to make two trips.

The countertop is one I have worked with before. It's called a "Baltic butcherblock". Its a nice change from the genertic countertops you commonly see.

This countertop has multiple cuts of wood all bound together. I got myself a 4' by 25" cut.

First things first I needed to pull the staples from the wood. It was holding the doors shut during transport.

I will darken both the countertop and cabinet. Using a natural solution with boiled linseed oil.

The cabinets need a little prep before staining. I removed the doors and hinges. Makes it easier to coat.

After a few coats of stain over the course of the day I will let it overnight to dry well. And then repeat the process for a few days. After many coats the wood will be noticeably darker.

Putting coats of stain on the removed doors as well. Takes me about 30 minutes every coat for everything so it's not so bad.

Here's the spot the cabinet will be replacing. The wire shelf has worked for years but it's time for something more permanent. I plan on installing cabinets above too eventually.

That cabinet is going to look fantastic there!

I think so too, now I just need overhead cabinets.

I want to see when it is done, hahaha!

You got it! Will do a follow up post soon.

Thats awesome. The 'Baltic Butcherblock' is so flexible when it comes to finishes. We use it a lot in Thailand in sheets but in UK, it wasn't something I saw so often. it looks really cool with industrial design and framework from 1" square steel, so I think the shelves might be there for a while, it looks cool mixed and matched :-)
Great job there Sir!

Thanks much, yeah the butcherblock is a cool way to make a table. How they used different kinds of wood to make it looks pretty amazing.

Yeah I bet it does look cool on steel, thanks for the comment.

Great job

ah thanks alot...

I love doing it myself type of projects! This will look amazing once it is done and I hope we get another post of a before and after shot, even if it is at the end of a post.

This really is daunting of you, matching up woods and stains can be challenging! Thanks for the step-by-step! It looks great so far!

Yeah me too, its nice to know I can do it mostly myself. I got around five or so coats of stain on them and now they are in the kitchen. Will do a follow up post soon on them.

As for matching the stain, its not a big deal to me if it does not match perfectly. Just glad to have more space for food items and kitchen tools.
