Introduction

In this post I am describing the construction of a dead wood area in my garden. In the last two days I realized this project. The purpose of this structure is to provide refuge for beetles, insects, bees, hedgehogs and birds. The module construction now just before winter is not optimal, but still better than not at all. I can only count on colonization next year.

Einleitung

In diesem Post beschreibe ich den Bau eines Totholzbereiches in meinem Garten. In den letzten zwei Tagen habe ich dieses Vorhaben realisiert. Sinn und Zweck dieses Bauwerks ist die Bereitstellung von Zufluchtstätten für Käfer, Insekten, Bienen, Igel und Vögeln. Die Anlage jetzt kurz vor dem Winter ist nicht optimal, aber immer noch besser als gar nicht. Mit einer Besiedelung kann ich damit erst im nächsten Jahr rechnen.

Excavation

I excavated an area of 1.60 mx 0.65 m, i.e. about 1 square meter 30 cm deep. The sides are held at about 45 degrees to allow bugs to get in and out of the pit without problems.

Aushub

Ich habe eine Fläche von 1,60 m x 0,65 m, also etwa 1 qm 30 cm tief ausgegraben. Die Seiten sind etwa in 45 Grad gehalten um Käfern einen problemlosen Ein- und Ausstieg zu ermöglichen.

Then leaves from different trees and bushes are mixed in as a base and distributed evenly.

Dann werden als Unterlage Blätter von verschiedenen Bäumen und Sträuchern gemischt eingebracht und gleichmäßig verteilt.

Larger, very rotten pieces of wood, placed on the front sides and also thinner, also very old, half-decomposed branches are loosely placed in between.

An den Stirnseiten sind größere, sehr morsche Holzstücke, und des weiteren dünnere ebenalls sehr alte halb zersetzte Äste locker aufgelegt.

This is followed by standing pieces of wood in all possible thicknesses up to a meter in height. It should be old branches that are already in an advanced process of decomposition in order to facilitate the settlement of the insects. I have kept the material in a protected location for 8 years and I am happy to be able to use it now for a good cause.

Jetzt folgen stehende Hölzer in allen möglichen Stärken bis auf einen Meter Höhe. Es sollten alte Äste sein, die bereits in einem fortgeschittenem Zersetzungsprozess sind um die Ansiedlung der Insekten zu erleichtern. Ich habe das Material seit 8 Jahren in geschützter Lage aufbewart und bin froh es nun für einen guten Zweck verbrauchen zu können.

Thick logs on the edge give the whole thing a little hold.

Dicke Scheithölzer am Rand geben dem Ganzen etwas Halt.

Now thin and medium-sized branches are set up like a tipi, the gaps can be left a little open so that birds can also find shelter in them.

Nun werden dünne und mittlere Äste wie ein Tipi aufgestellt, die Zwischenräume können durchaus etwas offen bleiben, damit können dann auch Vögel darin Schutz finden.

At the edge, pieces of bark and other pieces of firewood follow.

Am Rand folgen nun Rindenstücke und weitere Scheithölzer.

Now branches of any thickness are piled up and the gaps are repeatedly filled with leaves.

Nun werden Äste in beliebiger Stärke immer weiter angehäuft und die Zwischenräume immer wieder mit Laub befüllt.

And again a layer of branches, a cord in the upper area as a support, leaves and small pieces of wood in the spaces in between.

Und wieder eine Lage Äste, eine Schnur im oberen Bereich als Halt, Laub und kleine Holzstücke in die Zwischenräume.

So, all the material is installed and the final work can begin!

So, alles Material ist verbaut und die Schlußarbeiten können beginnen!

The excavation material is now piled up all around as a wall, creating a 50-60 cm deep beetle cellar which should be well protected from frost. This dead wood module is now ready and I am very satisfied with the result.

Der Aushub wird nun ringsherum als Wall aufgeschüttet, so entsteht ein 50-60 cm tiefer Käferkeller der vor Frost recht gut geschützt sein sollte. Dieses Totholzmodul ist nun fertig und ich bin mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden.

In the spring I will still use climbing plants to fully integrate the module in the garden.

Im Frühjahr werde ich noch Kletterpflanzen einsetzen um das Modul vollständig im Garten zu integrieren.

To the left of it is a hedgehog castle with a hedgehog. I found it asleep while cleaning up in the garden and brought it here and built this beautiful big castle for it. With the dead wood next to it, it will surely find enough to eat in spring and will feel comfortable in my garden for a long time.

Links daneben ist eine Igelburg mit Igel. Ich fand ihn beim Aufräumen im Garten und habe ihn schlafend hierhergebracht und ihm diese schöne große Burg gebaut. Mit dem Totholz daneben wird er im Frühling sicherlich genug zum fressen finden und sich noch lange bei mir im Garten wohlfühlen.
