I had made a coaster for my son with wool. It is now becoming dirty and so I thought I would make another one. I happened to have a double-color yarn but it is not in bright colors. So, as an experiment, I tried to use two yarns and it turned out quite well for an experiment.
I am providing the photos step by step so you can refer to it if you intend to make one for yourself or as a gift for a family member or a friend.
Place two yarns like this and make a knot. Continue to make chains as much as you wish. I made 11 chains. Instead of turning over, I decided to go roundabout.
, !
It did seem a bit taxing to use both yarns at the same time but I made sure to use a 4mm needle for this project. Thinner hooks can be used but I was not sure if would be able to do it in a faster pace. The yarn should be tightened because when one uses one at a time like I have after this step, there can be glaring holes if we do not pull it tight.
Up to this stage, I used both yarns together. Then I switched to a single color and did a half double crochet to complete a round.
I did this in quite a hurry. I am afraid I did make a mistake or two but this is not a gift and it was just an experiment of sorts. So, it is okay and anyway, I hope I can make a more beautiful one soon.
So, as you can see, I have used the red color yarn and made half double crochet. I did not turn around but went in a round fashion which is quite okay for a coaster. The pink color yarn should be just left like that and used in the next round.
Pink color and half double crochet again. I also did a chain in between, to increase the length.
I felt that this color combination was really eye-catching. Maybe, this can be also extended to make a table mat of sorts. If we use jute yarn, we could also make door mats in this same fashion. The only thing required would be a really large needle.
When we were in school, some of us opted for learning how to make door mats. For that, a wooden board with nails stuck the opposite way was used and jute was woven in a certain manner and door mats were made. Such skills were taught alongside the usual subjects.
After doing a round of red color and half double crochet and then pink color and double crochet, I finished this coaster by doing a round of red color double crochet.
I do hope it looks good enough. Next time, I will note down the steps and then try it with a multi-color yarn to see if it is better than this or repeat this again.
