My Fear For Mathematics and It's Implications on My Son + The Way Forward

in #hive-1994203 years ago

Hi friends
It's been a good day for me and I know it's also good for you. I just want to share my fears mathematics and how it almost affected my son in our Homeschool, Nigeria where I'm from mathematics is the best and most easiest subject that you can ever think of, but at some point difficult to learn for me while coming up I never found joy in learning mathematics because of the inabilities of our mathematics teacher to teach the subject effectively. Its you girl @salvictoria22 greeting from this part of the world.

I Detested Mathematics
I so much hated mathematics up to the extent that the boldness to be outspoken wasn't there again, and now God has given me a lovely husband that loves and like mathematics. He derives joy in solving mathematics when ever he is opportune to do so. My phobia for mathematics made me dislike the teacher, which was one of the major barrier for me not understanding the subject. It was after High School that I was told that the first step in understanding mathematics was to love the person teaching it. All these where quite my fears while I was still coming up as a child when learning mathematics, and now I can see it's beginning to affect my son.

How We Handled the Issue of Mathematics in our Homeschool

I realized that whenever mathematics is mentioned in our homeschool he'll start feeling uncomfortable, so I decided to allow my husband to take the mathematics classes in our homeschool since his good with it, while I teach the kids how to read and pronounce words. This at first did not work out smoothly with his father, because my son loves staying close to me, but for the sake of not repeating history, I was deliberate about teaching my son mathematics. Should I say that what's happening to my son is Karma maybe not. Remembered a scripture that says you will reap what you sow, at some point I realized that my parents were too busy and didn't pay more attention to me and my siblings in building an effective homeschool that would've helped discover my fear of mathematics. This promoted my watch over my son the area of mathematics. Mathematics is a nice subject and its required that we parents must teach their children to know it better and earlier in life when they're tender to help them overcome the fear in them. In other for them to overcome fear of mathematics you must do the following:

  • teach them how to love the subject matter.
  • they should be deliberate and positive in approaching the subject matter.
  • introduce simple mathematics to them when they're very tender.
  • monitor their growth from time to time.
  • be friendly to them.

Conclusion: creating a balance in our homeschool between myself and my husband is targeted towards the effective growth of our children. Both of us must bring out our best in the area we're more knowledgeable in, which has practically help our son to start loving mathematics as a subject. We pray that it'll not take long for him to start solving harder mathematical questions.
Hope you had a great time reading my post. I may not be there yet in developing better content but in no time I'll be there. Thanks for stopping by to read my post.

When I was studying I noticed that when it comes to mathematics boys are the ones who are excelling, girls not much. With that being said, it is safe to say that mathematics is for boys to excel in. If I may add, the majority of my classmates both in high school and college love mathematics.

I can say that you did a good job in conquering your fears. I am sure, your son will love mathematics too.

It's very true that most people in high that loves mathematics are boys. Also is a girl wants to know mathematics they'll be excellent in it. Thanks for the comment.

Yep, girls will also excel in mathematics if they chose to.

I expect we all have weaknesses and fears we don't wish to pass on to our children. Well done for trying to work around those fears. Perhaps the next step is to learn with him and try to overcome those fears yourself. I know my maths improved when I started homeschooling my daughters.

That's true, I'll make a conscious effort to learn from my husband. He has started teaching me and I'll in no time become a like him. Thanks for stopping by.
