I love my husband. When I start talking about something crafty he always seems to come up with a better idea and seems happy to help me do it. I really wanted an egg storage thing in the kitchen that wasn't an egg cartoon, and whilst my idea was to lacquer an egg box and add a few mushroom pics, he said 'let's make it out of wood', which we did.
The first step was to find the scrap bit of wood, a bit of hardwood from a very old dresser. Believe me the drill was SMOKING as he did it. I'd measured out where I wanted the holes.
We decided to go for 15 in the end, as there was room in the middle.
Then we cut it to size and gave it a sand. I glued an amanita mushroom on it that I had from an old book, decoupage style. I'd like to experiment with transferring pictures onto wood via photocopies but I'm not sure how to do that - do you know?
We then made feet out of the holes we'd cut, simply countersinking a hole and drilling through. I waxed the top with a blend of beeswax and olive oil. That's just what I had lying around.
In the end I was pretty thrilled with it and it sure looks sweeter than an egg carton.
Even better that it cost NOTHING - it was all scrap we had lying around. Sure beats the fancy ceramic ones I saw on ETsy for three million dollars. MInd you I wouldn't say no to one for a gift, but I do love the one we made.
Where do you store your eggs?
