This is my post for #freewriters Saturday prompt hard liquor hosted by @mariannewest

On one of our trips to what we call the cheap food store, we bought some purple potatoes. I had never seen purple ones before. The skin and meat are purple. When you boil them the water turns an ugly purple color, not pleasing at all.

Since the purple potatoes are sprouting eyes, I decided that I would plant some. We have several of these blue barrels, I used the saws-all and cut one lengthwise then drilled holes in the bottom of it. I am going to plant some of the purple potatoes.

I am wondering if we could make a hard liquor from some of them. I think vodka is made from potatoes. If we can make it, maybe we will start a new fad, purple vodka.

I am running a little late on getting potatoes planted here in Florida but better late than never. The University of Florida says to plant potatoes in January but if I go by the Farmers Almanac planting root crops by the moon, I am not supposed to plant them until 25 or 26 of February. So who is right?

The blackberries think it is spring, but I am afraid that we could still get a freeze. 7 years ago yesterday we had a bad freeze, so I am not counting it out.

Potatoes grow beautifully in drums, AND Poor Richard is almost always right... from a backyard planter taught by her farmer grandma...

My husband grows sweet potatoes in 15-gallon flower pots, he wanted me to use one of them but I have to be different, lol. Who is Poor Richard, My Granny always planted by the moon, cut hair by it, and other things that I can not remember at the moment?

Poor Richard's Almanac ... contemporaneous with and often confused with the Farmer's Almanac...

Published by Ben Franklin to promote his printing business, he was Poor Richard. I learned another thing.

I had never heard of Poor Richard's Almanac, I will look it up. I learned something new today. :)

I would like to give potatoes in drums a try too. Am not sure about when to plant it. January sounds odd to me since the soil can be frozen. You use special soil?

where I live it does not freeze, if you want to grow them, I would start the plants inside then when the chance of frost is over you can plant them outside. I have nematodes in our soil so I have to buy soil. You do not want any that holds a lot of water you want it loose enough to have good drainage. Good luck.

Jeff planted potatoes in big drums last year. They grew nicely. Did you like the potatoes?

Did he split the drum or grow them in the whole drum? They taste just like the white ones.

He grew them in the whole drum. We will grow more this summer.
