'I did a thing!'

Have you ever watched the series 'Clarksons farm' already where 'Top Gear' TV presentator Jeremy Clarkson tries to run a farm with zero experience? The process of starting the farm goes with a lot of trial and error and every now and then when he has a success he shouts out 'I did a thing!'

Apart from that this is a super fun show to watch, I really like the message that when you try to dig in some matter, that sometimes you just might even succeed in your journey from it. And when you do, you just have to pat yourself on the back for it and scream it out loud!

So I don't feel like the most house DIY person on earth in terms in fixing stuff or installing things. Especially in electrical stuff it always feels like you should have a professional do it, because connecting the stuff in the wrong place could easily give you a deent shock. Or even worse, set you house on fire or whatever. In general, I stay away from the electrics and leave it to the people who know what they are doing.

While actually....maybe there is nothing more straight forward than electrics.

From broken to unbroken

I have this electrical vent which clears the humid air from your bathroom. It has been making an annoying sound for years and also the amoount of air that was actually circulating was certainly questionable.

Recently when I turned it on I could it hear it jam entirely and that was time to hit the main breaker before the little motor would have to work too hard and burn through. Time for a new one.

But installing this in a ceiling so some electrical lines that have no outlet but just these old wires. Not very appealing, but on the other hand...It didn't look that challenging.

Turning off the main breaker again to work on it safely, uninstall the old wires from the machine and screwing in the new wires at the same place. Put the machine back into place and bolt it back where it needs to be. This seemed like a decent beginner DIY electrical project for someone who lacks experience. I was still nervous on putting the power back on though...

You can not imagine how happy I was to hear it run gently and work the way it should when I turned the breaker back on.

Electrical stuff in the end is just like plumbing. Make circles and connect everything from A to B. Why did this feel like such a disaster beforehand?

I took out some tea and a giant well-deserved cookie and chilled on the couch. 'I did a thing!!!'

Sort:

Electrics don't bother me that much. Bit the same though - I'm usually copy and paste. Get yourself a paintbrush to get rid of that dust though. Dust is the main cause of electrical fires

Yeah copy and paste works fantastic for electronics. The others have done the figuring out already hahaha.

That is a good suggestion on removing the additional dust actually. Didn't think of that. Thanks for saving my house from fire!

I'm not much of a DIY guy, although more and more I try to dabble on it; I can relate to the joy of being able to solve those problems by ourselves!

It does bring a lot of joy indeed if it works out. Usually when I start a project and then I find out I am missing some tools or some essential part. And then everything 5 minute project turns into a week project and that is no fun at all haha.

So I call this victory indeed!

I've seen bits of that show on YT and Dear God, how that man manages to stay alive is a miracle. And then the bashes on the poor boy who works for him 🤣

Hahah poor Caleb indeed. Having to deal with the foolishess of someone who starts a new project every 5.5 seconds.

Yeah, that he didn't kill himself or someone else with those giant machines is a miracle indeed.
