At ten, I didn't always go looking for trouble. I never do. It's just that something rises up in me when boys pick on girls for no reason. I never understood their motives.

Dad taught me better. But I had the physical ability to do something about it then. And, that particular day during lunch I did.

Two years later, I learned that not all situations are what they seem if you don't know the history when I saw Melissa and Steven holding hands during recess.

Confused, I asked Dad.

"Cory, I understand. It's just that your body's ignition hasn't turned on yet and revved up the engine." He smiled, patted me on the head, and left me to ponder his words.

Funny dad comparing that situation to a car. Go figure!

Still, it wasn't fair that I was the only one who received punishment.

Detention and extra homework for a week for interfering in what was clearly a difference of opinion in a blossoming romance.

I'll not stop looking out for them, though. You never know.

Welcome back to my freewrite prompt story for this week. The photo that is the subject of the story spoke to me about a young boy.

Describe what you see.
In his room, a brown-haired young boy with a blue shirt sits at a desk or table and cups his head in his hands. His expressions consists of a deep frown that tells of unhappiness over a situation. He's surrounded by books and other reading material. Other cabinets are in the background with more books and what appears to be toys.

Describe what you feel.
The expression in the boy's eyes reflects his disappointment at an unpleasant situation has occurred in which he was involved. He is highly upset. Perhaps he received punishment or isn't allowed to do or have something he desires.

Write a story or poem about what you think is going on. I leave with you my story for: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 8/24/24.

Kids can be troublesome at this age, it need a lot of work in help in this stage especially if they are stubborn.

That is true @samueluche07. It also depends on the situation. And most children don't understand the complex relationships while in elementary school.

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your engagement.

Very interesting build up

Hello @christybliss. Thanks for your visit. I'm so happy you found my story interesting, especially the build up. I was hoping for this reaction and didn't want to unveil the ending.

I appreciate your support. Take care.

What an interesting and thoughtful story! 🤗

Thanks so much @estilodereba. I'm so happy you got a chance to stop by and view my story. I'm pleased you found it interesting. Children in elementary school experiences a variety of emotions as they learn their environment and how relationships of all kind work.

Take care. I appreciate your kind compliment.

It is good that he has a wise and patient father ... on one side, though, he does have the protective instincts of a man, and clearly cares for Melissa ... on one side, he is precocious. On the other side ... not there yet. Child development is often like this ... but he is precocious on the right side, at least.

Yes, his protective instincts I feel were instilled by his father. He won't give up because of one wrong assumption and will learn the non-verbal cues of relationships once his "engine" kicks in.

Thanks for your visit.
