Crochet 101: The World of Stitches and Loops

in #hive-127911 β€’ 3 years ago

While working on something for class last night, crochet thoughts crept into my head. πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚ That made me wonder how long it has already been since I resumed my journey in this world of stitches and loops. I then checked my first post on my IG account. To my surprise, it was posted last July 12, which means, today is exactly my 2nd month with mgothooked!

You may read the story behind mgothooked here.

That made me kinda sentimental, and I started looking back to the projects I have finished, so far. In this post, I am going to share with you some of them!

Most of the time, crocheters or artists in general have a specific niche. They focus on a certain project type and spend time learning everything they can about it. As for me though, I don't focus on a specific kind, and it has its own pros and cons. All types of projects excite me, that is why the projects I have made are very random, too! Haha

Amigurumi

Aside from the water bottle cover I mentioned in my first crochet post here, one of the first projects I worked on were amigurumis.

Amigurumi is a Japanese word which refers to small knitted or crocheted stuffed toys, such as animals, cartoon characters, food, etc.

I made this bunch of cuties as a gift to a friend and her teammates at work. The design was from a logo they made for their team. It is a bomb with a flower sticking out from it, and their colors were chosen according to each person's favorite color. I know that bombs are supposed to be black, but 1. I didn't have a black yarn back then, and 2. I felt like gray would make it look cuter! HAHA. Kulit nga eh! They referred to it as either onion or turnip, which I found funny! Haha The more I look at them, the less I see them as bombs na rin. Hahaha What do you think?

While searching for more gift ideas, (yup! I like creating gifts haha) I found cute zodiac amigurumis, and thought about making one for myself. I was a bit hesitant about this at first because I prefer making stuff I could use, and a keychain is not really something very in need these days. But the zodiac amiguri was too cute, and I didn't want to refrain myself from making something without a purpose other than its cuteness. Haha Since I was (and still am) new to amigurumis, I looked for patterns online. However, the cute ones I saw were only available for purchasing, and as a beginner, I didn't want to spend yet, especially because I was still exploring. Hence, I decided to gather a few inspiration, chopped the project into parts, and watched individual tutorials for the hair and head. I ended up freehanding the horn, which was indeed trial-and-error. I was super kilig when I finished this project! It may be sleeping in my drawer at the moment, but every time I see it, it still sparks joy, which is such a huuuuge thing!

When I finished the Ram keychain, I showed it to my 5-yr olf nephew and 2-yr old niece. As expected, they loved it! I told them that it was a ram, but Z, my nephew, kept on calling it a llama. Haha That project sparked an idea in Z, and shortly, he requested one for himself. Haha He had so many ideas, but soon, we agreed on a Pterodactyl. I found a free pattern online, which was super useful! I let Z decide on the colors to be used, for as long as they were available in my stash. This project tested my resourcefulness, too, as I ran out of fiber filling midway. I ended up using the scrap yarns from previous projects and small felt cloth cut-outs. Haha.

These were actually finger puppets and not amigurumis, but I still wanted to include these in this category. Haha

Before I went back to crocheting, my obessession was on felt cloth. I used to sew different items with it, and one of them were finger puppets. I made tons of them for myself, and sold a few sets, too. A month before I started mgothooked, my friend asked if I was still making finger puppets. The thing was, my sewing machine had issues, and I didn't want to hand-sew it. Long story short, she inquired again last July, and I asked if she was okay with crocheted finger puppets. I was honest even from the start and informed her that I haven't done it before. She was super trusting, and said yes. Huhu I looked for inspiration or patterns online, but none felt like home. And soon, I thought, why not replicating my existing felt cloth finger puppets design? And I did just that! Haha I am super proud and happy about how these cuties turned out.

This set was by far my biggest amigurumi project. This was a custom order from my colleague. She asked me to make a Slippery Fish set, which she would gift to someone. Again, I haven't done this before, but she took a risk on me! I was a bit nervous while working on each piece because I wasn't sure if I'll be able to do it right. Haha. But the feeling of enjoyment while creating overpowered the nerves, and that made my experience extra special. My ever-supportive colleague loved the set, that she asked me to make another set, and this time, it is for herself! Haha.

Headbands and Scrunchies

This one actually came out as a surprise for me, as I was not a headband fan. I only started making headbands because my Mama requested for one. The pink headband in the upper left photo was from a tutorial by Crochet by Bev on YT. Then it was followed by another headband for my friend, which was also an idea from her. It was initially a plain one, but I felt like it would be too boring for her personality, so I added ears, following the ear pattern by Sandra La Madeleine.

One day, she brought it to the office, and to our surprise, her colleagues liked it. She told me that she barely got to use it anymore because everyone wanted to borrow. Pretty soon, I started receiving voice messages from her officemates through her, asking me to make one for them, too. It was overwhelming, in a nice way. Haha. That batch of orders were followed by more custom orders, which really surprised me because I haven't even announced that I was accepting orders! Soon enough, I got addicted to making headbands, that I made one for each yarn color I had. Haha

Aside from headbands, another obssession of mine is crocheting scrunchies. I tried other designs before, but this particular design is the one that sparks joy in me. Making scrunchies really empties my head, as I can work on them mindlessly. It's as if my hands start to have their own life. Haha I even make some of these as freebies to some client orders, just because I wanted to keep on making them, but I couldn't possibly use everything at once. Haha And for the hot weather in the PH, these would surely come in handy!

Sling Bags

These projects made me super proud of myself, especially the white one! It was inspired by a mini cross bag by E-yo crochet on YT. I was ecstatic the whole time I was making this bag! I didn't know how it would exactly look like in the end, yet part of me was sure that I would love it. I wanted it to be a simple vintage-themed design to feed my minimalist oldie soul. Haha I went extra pa by adding a pocket inside and making the strap adjustable. Aaaaaa! I've used this a few times na, which gives me an indescribable feeling every time!

The black bag, on the other hand, was another request by Mama. She wanted a phone pouch because she kept on placing her phone everywhere. Haha I made the strap adjustable, too. But instead of using the steel one, I went for the big wooden bead, which I think gave it a special vibe.

Wearables

Making a top was also something I didn't foresee, as most of the crocheted tops I have seen before were too revealing for my awkward self. But as I explored more, I got to see more conservative options! That gave me the idea and desire to one day make one for myself.

I initially wanted to follow a free pattern I saw online, but I didn't have the yarn weight similar to what was used, and I am too lazy to gauge my yarn. After putting a thought on it, I decided to take a risk and do it freehand. Hahaha What a jump, right? It was quite a journey for me, given that I didn't have any background with crocheting a top. Plus I made it more complicated pa by making the top two-way. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into, but I finished it naman, so praise God! I call this the Rebecca Top because I love that name, and I kept on remembering my friend who also likes that name, while working on the top. Hihi The pictures on the right was me, trying to be as less awkward as I could in front of the camera. lol I just couldn't be my normal self on photos showing my face, hence I end up making silly faces. Haha

This one is my latest big project, which I finished literally last night! It is a wide leg shorts. I followed a pattern by knitcroaddict. I am super happy with this piece because it is super comfy and versatile! I could wear it with a shirt or cropped top, and I can even tuck a top in! I love love love it!

Okay, that was quite long. Hahaha. If ever you read this until here, thank you so much! While looking back to these projects, I also saw and realized how much I grew in my crochet journey. Two months ago, who would have thought that I would end up croheting my own bag and clothes, right?

So if there is something that you also would like to try, be it crocheting or other stuff, go for it! We all start at the bottom, but with continuous practice, we would surely make progress!

Stay sane and safe!
Let's spread happiness.

Awww thanks so much for the kind words! You should try it some time, too!

Hello,

I identify with your content, as it is very enthusiastic, that enthusiasm is what I think we impregnate our crochet work.

Like you, I do not concentrate on the same type of knitting, I want to knit all the techniques, I spend time researching about it and try to develop what I'm researching, is that knitting is fascinating.

In fact the amigurrumi doesn't look like a bomb to me, it looks like an onion, hahah. The knitted replica of the finger puppets you had made in felt turned out to be spectacular.

I loved the shorts...they look super comfy.

Thanks for sharing this compilation.

Regards

Thanks so much for this detailed comment! And hahaha the onion part made me laugh 🀣🀣
