Yesterday was my first day back at my childhood home. I am here to help my Dad get the roofing on the garage which was my first home before he built the house, and to deal with the carnage left after the heavy wet snows broke so many trees. The oak trees are all hard wood and can't take the stress of heavy loads on them like the much more flexible pines can. Here my Dad was cutting the break point of the limb that had landed on the corner of the garage.
We got to work around 9am and it was still fairly cool out. To start I got the screws all removed from the tarps that had been atop the roof over the tar paper. Overall everything looked fairly good and there wasn't anything glaring at us that needed to be fixed. The tarps all went over the front of the garage where I later folded them up and stacked them in a pile. He swept the roof off of all the oak tree leaves and I got to removing the edging.
We had the edging all removed and the roof swept of the piles of oak tree leaves. That meant we had to go to town to pickup the underlayment and the screws for the roofing. Who we are getting the roofing from also orders supplies from All Weather so we know the underlayment we installed is right.
Then we got to work installing the underlayment. I left a bit of overage on each end as they tell you to, I do it so the edging holds the underlayment down nicely.
We got to the peak with 4 rows of the underlaymet which laid over the crown of the roof. I installed the edging on the front side so it would hold the underlayment down and keep it from blowing up. I then rolled out the rest of the underlayment and found that we were about 11 feet short. SUPER ANNOYING! By this time it was getting hot on the roof and so we headed inside for a bit of a break.
After our break we decided it was best to go back to town to pickup screws which we need for the edging and also beer. Once back I got the rest of the edging installed except for a pair of pieces where the underlayment is missing. We got things cleaned up and headed inside where I made spaghetti for dinner.
We watched the Rick on the rocks vid about super volcanoes in the pacific northwest. It was nearly 10pm and I was beat and crashed quickly.
Today we are going to pickup the metal roofing then hopefully get it all installed. Then the big job begins of cutting all the downed trees and limbs around the property. We will be getting a chipper for a day to try to shove as much of these shitty oak branches through as possible.
