Grain, Harvests, 52 lbs Beans Picked, Deck Railing - Wednesday

in #hive-1230463 years ago

On the road by 5:30 yesterday morning I was in town picking up 8 barrels of spent brewing grain from a double batch they had brewed on Tuesday. 7 of he 8 barrels were full with one being about 2/3 full. The smoke in the air made for a dulled sunrise.

I loaded 2 barrels into the truck then piled the empties behind that got dropped at the other brewery. The 6 barrels loaded on the trailer and I had to be careful when braking as the total load was pretty heavy.

The sheep and alpaca all waited with drooling mouths for me to let them into the masses of grain. I gave them a little taste throwing some over the fence but made them wait until I had all the barrels emptied.

29 pounds of summer squash which is right on my daily average and has me at 1140 pounds picked.

I had talked with Carl at the co-op about my beans and he ended up getting all 200 pounds of my beans, of which I don't have them all picked yet. So a good portion of my day was spent picking beans. I made it through 52 pounds before my back was toasted for the evening. I can only spend so much time hunched over before my back needs a rest. I still need 50 pounds of beans picked to meet the 200 pounds and then I have to bag up 400 half pound bags of beans for delivery tomorrow morning.

As I was working on picking the last bucket the road crew drove a couple of pieces of equipment down our dead end and parked them for the night, a chip spreader and a compactor. This morning they have already driven them out the the road to begin work.

Spending so much time on the beans I didn't get to picking the cucumbers till late. While I was I saw this little butterfly chilling on a lamb's quarters leaf.

17 cucumbers for the day with a couple curled wonky ones. @stryeyz should be asking around her work today for any takers.

Once she was home from work we went to the creek as I was in serious need of a cooling off dunk. The transition between the creek and the rest of the farm is always extremely evident as we hike up the hill afterwards. We climb past this one tall Ponderosa pine and suddenly the heat hits and it makes the act of dunking in the creek a requirement.

A little over a half pound of tomatoes were ready. They take so long it seems to ripen but that is okay as we have tons of other produce to deal with.

In all I managed to pick just shy of 100 pounds of produce for the day, 29 lbs squash, 52 lbs beans, .5 lb tomato, and 17 pounds of cucumbers which means I have pulled over 1500 pounds of produce from my garden so far.

After dinner and a bit of rest I went out to work on the railing a bit. The point was to get one section of railing fit so I could see how it all goes together and how the cuts will need to be made. We worked until it was too dark to see but got the railing mostly setup. I have a solid idea of how it goes now so the rest won't be too difficult.

Today is picking. First the squash then the rest of my day is going to be spent picking beans and then bagging beans. If possible I will try to work on the railing some but the beans are the priority.
