Levelling Up: Changing my first tyre solo!.jpg

In a family of pretty handy people with tradies and people who have lots of practical know-how, my wife and I stand out as pretty useless when it comes to real everyday sorts of tasks. That said, we are learning quite a lot and a good bunch of learning seems to be just being willing to take a risk and try stuff! At least, I have the science and computer stuff to back me up... and I am a good deal more competent at that sort of thing in comparison to the rest of the family! So, I get landed with IT support... and if anyone happens to need some rusty quantum/relativity or advanced mathematics knowledge applied to their electrical/plumbing/building projects then I'm more than happy to pitch in.

... or an extra pair of well meaning but particularly weak hands!

Anyway, I was going to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning with my little one, when I got a message from my wife saying that she had a flat tyre and if she should call the roadside assistance or if I would come out and change it. It was tempting to just get her to call the roadside assist... she was half an hour drive away. But I thought, no... I should really do this.

I've changed two tyres in my life... but I've had help and someone watching over me to assist as well. This would be a chance to do a solo change... in a carpark, in good weather! Plus, I could teach my wife to do it as well.

So, puling out the old one... still with air. I'm pretty good with keeping the tyres inflated. Even the spare...

Now, I'm not really sure why the old tyre deflated... I was driving on unsealed roads yesterday to get to a wedding job... so, it was mostly a rock or something that did it. However, on the 90 minute drive back it wasn't deflated... and I did check when I got home, as I thought that it was a possibility after driving on such crappy road.

My wife must have driven that entire stretch on a flat tyre... she said it felt funny leaving our home, but thought nothing of it and kept going.

So, just a few moments to familiarise myself before starting...

... and with the help of my 7 year old to roll the tyres into position and out again... we were good to go. However, I said I would drive this car back... just on the off-chance that I didn't tighten the nuts enough. I was standing on the tool... but I'm not crazily heavy either. I was pretty confident that they were fine... but you never know. Plus, I needed to check the tyres again... the front left one looked less good last night, and I really thought that if any were going to be flat this morning, that that would be the one. Not this rear left one...

... and I was so proud of myself, that I didn't notice my rookie error until I got to the air pumping station. Yep, I didn't put the hubcap in the right orientation... so, the air valve was hidden behind it.

Sigh... so, we had to redo the whole thing when I got home. But this time, my wife did it under my supervision!

How brave they were! Truly, while riding in the car that moment always came to my mind, you know how it is said that the more we think about something terrifying that could happen, it won't happen ha,ha,ha,ha,ha. It really is a bit cumbersome, I don't think I could ever do that @bengy

I was a bit worried... but these are decent skills to learn! Plus, it saves money on calling someone out to fix it!
