MANORVILLEMIKE MADE MAPLE SYRUP

in #vyb3 years ago

There is a mature Sugar Maple tree growing just outside my garden area. Over the years it has gotten bigger spreading over the garden on the north side. I decided to cut down an overhanging branch with the pole saw a few weeks ago to let more light in.

Sap began dripping out of the cut end with no sign of stopping. I got some pots and pans to catch the bleeding tree. In went on dripping the next day, but unfortunately it rained and diluted the sap.

I went on line to see how you make maple syrup. You put it in a big pot and boil it outside. A 10 gallon pot boils down to a quart of maple syrup. I only had about 3 gallons and boiled it in the house with a window open to lessen the condensation.

I got a pint when I was done, but was watery.

Despite being watery it tasted very good. Used in my oatmeal cereal.

Nice! I wanna have a young sapling!! 😂

Got to move up north where these trees grow.

Very cool, we've got a bunch of maples in our yard. Syrup is a big local business up here. I've had several folks already wanting to tap into our trees. The big boys do it with tubing and suction pumps nowadays, don't really care for the look of the tubes all over. Still debating if maybe we'll do some way in the back out of sight. Don't really have the patience or time to use the old bucket method except maybe for a little of our own like you did.

Watch some videos of how they do it. Need 10 gallons which is a lot to make 1 quart. but you can get that out of a few trees. It weakens the tree if you take too much. It is very tasty and fresh. You use cheese cloth or a clean tee shirt to filter out impurities before and after heating at a low temperature to evaporate the water, leaving the maple syrup.

There is nothing like fresh Maple Syrup. We have a neighbor that has tapped the trees near his home and I bet he will get a nice amount. I have a maple tree in my yard but have never tried. Good for you for do it and I am sure you will catch more next year.

My way of cutting off a branch was just to radical. I got to see what it tasted like.. Good, but I don't want to add more sugar to my diet.
