I’m entertaining the idea of opening my own homemade Jam company. Over May and June I spent a lot of time making Guava Jam from our very own Guava tree but now I’m venturing out and testing a few other flavours to find our winners.

I’ve found some basic recipes that I really love so you’re going to see them rolling in over the next few days.

I thought I’d start with everybody’s favourite…

Strawberry Jam

INGREDIENTS

1 kg fresh Strawberries
3 cups Sugar
1 Tbsp Lemon juice

METHOD

  • Hull the strawberries and chop them roughly

  • Place the chopped strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a thick bottom pot and bring to the boil.

  • Boil for two minutes on high heat and then reduce to medium-low heat

  • Use a masher to mash the fruit chunks smaller if desired for a smooth jam or leave it chunky and enjoy.

  • Simmer for another 20-30 minutes until the jam begins to thicken and get richer in colour.

  • Test the jam by putting some mixture on a cold plate and put in the fridge for 2 minutes. It should be gooey and sticky to the touch. If still quite runny then continue boiling for a few minutes and then do a test again.

  • Sterilise the jars (a run through the dishwasher is sufficient) and allow them to dry completely prior to starting your jam.

  • Carefully spoon the hot jam into the sterilised jars, wipe down the edges with a clean paper towel and place the lid on tightly.

  • Refrigerate the jars and the lids will seal on.

This jam has less sugar than most jams and needs no additional pectin to thicken. It is naturally gluten free, dairy free and vegan.

I am so happy with the outcome of this jam and can’t wait for my family and friends to give it a try.

Let me know if you give it a try. It’s so easy and wonderful to be able to enjoy your very own homemade jam.

I’m looking forward to a morning tea and scone party to highlight this gorgeous jam. What else is great with jam???

if only we have access to strawberry. :( i can taste the jam just by looking at it!

Well at least you can enjoy the eye candy! Most fruits can be made into jam so I’ll be posting a few more flavours this week when I make my jam. Get ready for guava, grape and mixed berries.

Wooooah. That would be great. I'll be watching for it.

Looks great! So fun that you have been making jams. Yummy.

I’ve just had a request for plum jam so now I’m on the hunt for fruit and a good recipe!!!

Your jams look tasty! Thanks for sharing your recipe. I feel inspired to give this a try. Wish me luck!

Yay good luck! The trick is the high heat boil followed by the long slow boil. If it’s not ready when you Brest it. Just keep it in the low boil for longer.

I will swing by and drop you a freshly baked loaf of sourdough bread for a bottle of that jam! Looks super delish and I love a good jam with freshly baked bread. If you are venturing on opening the business, best of luck! My bakery ventures failed due to lockdown, but I think the market is picking up now again.

Thanks! Just doing testers at the moment and then might venture to local WhatsApp groups etc. Not looking to go too big. My husband says I’m bored and need something to do 😂 So this is me keeping busy and being creative at the same time. Oh you can definitely swing by with a loaf of Sourdough!!! Give us a shout when you’re in Kommetjie!!! Jams waiting in the cupboard. Just made my first ever marmalade and blueberry jam too.

Awesome! It is nice to be busy and make some money from it. And if you produce something as yummy as homemade jam, then all the more reason to go into it! Even if you do not sell all of them. I baked like that, if I sold all of my loaves too bad for me. If I did not sell all the loaves, they came straight to my home kitchen in which I munched them greedily haha. I will make so! Do you have discord or something?

Yup in discord zo3d#8550 I don’t check it too often though 😂

Awesome! Will send you a request. I know the feeling haha. I only use it once in a while.
