One of my sons gave me this link. I'm glad I gave it the 47 minutes required.
Backstory: In 2016, I spent 9 months off grid. For most of that time, I had no running water, no electricity (except a couple of battery-operated devices), no refrigeration, no indoor toilet. The only things I missed? My computer and the internet. I quickly learned how to live without these things - learned what the real rules of refrigeration were. I would love to live the lifestyle this man talks about - just give me my internet and computers and I'll be perfectly contented.
This man (Charles Bello) and his wife bought this wooded paradise in Northern California back in 1968. They didn't have any money left to have someone build them a house, so they got to work themselves... and built a simple A-frame structure in 5 days with 5 people.
They lived in that house for 15 years (I think it was) and raised their children in it. Judging from what I saw in the video, it couldn't have been more than 600-700 square feet of space... probably less.
Since then, they've built a more elegant home, with many windows to keep them connected to the outside. Charles talks about having deer sit outside their kitchen window just watching them.
They have a sunken garden that can grow tomatoes all year around - all connected to the house, so they don't have to go anywhere to get their breakfast, or whatever. They rarely need to go to the grocery store as a result.
There are other structures on the land (400 acres worth), all built by themselves.
Charles has many ideas about the do-it-yourself attitude behind their self-sufficiency - things that could inspire anyone who finds that lifestyle desirable.
This is an amazing exposé about the life of someone determined to live more simply - with amazing results. Definitely worth a watch!
As usual, I'm simply sharing a YouTube video - all rights remain with the original producer/uploader.
