This illustration was made in about 6 hours, and in this post I will show you my artistic process to make it.
The whole process is manual, I appreciate your support.
I don't want to start this post with some stupid thing like feelings or what motivated me to do this was because I felt x way. BUT if I have to be honest with the reason for this illustration was: it's been a long time since I have illustrated for myself, to enjoy it, to experience it.
and i think that every post i make on hive is when i go back to experimenting for myself.
especially with the contexts, because for me the contexts are important when illustrating.
a long time ago i saw a very nice illustration with that eighties style, you know the hands don't have a very defined shape, the waist is small, VERY small and the eyes are oval.
I always like to experiment with different styles, there is no style that resists me and I translate it to something that my hands can do, or to my own style, there is always an essence of me in each of them.
anyway i really like the moth man so i thought of a strange mix between a pumpkin moth woman, and a bat (lately i have developed a taste for bats) uwu i would like to have the bones of one as decoration.
so with my ehhh context put together, about what i wanted to do, i decided to start sketching.
Color palette and brush
Before I even started sketching I chose what kind of brush/pencil I would use and also the color palette as shown below. For me the most difficult thing is the color palette, this chart shows my color history for this illustration.
The sketch
i always start with the head, and some rough shapes to have an idea to where to put the shoulders and so on.
here i placed the eyes, the shape of the face.
here im working on hair, hips and oh my god i hate drawing feets XD so hard.
hair done, wings done, and time to start working on the hands and fixing the feets, just to keep it simple.
when i finish the sketch, i had to start with the clean lines, so i place a background color and lower the opacity of everything below the clean lines.
i regret changing the mouth, lmao this one looks cute too.
i changed the eyes, and mouth here just to see if it was something i liked but i change it back to the oval ones, later.
ait, here i filled the external layer with color, leaving the inside area with no color (dont do this, XD you better fill with a flat color the character, and then aply color to this)
here im changing the background color
changed back to the oval eyes, and start working on the color of the eyes, i go back and forth several times with the eyes e.e like you have no idea, i was like "mmmm ok i like the oval ones but still want to try with the other ones"
placed a light color for her skin, cuz her color pallete its gonna be mostly dark. you know shadows, hair, wings etc.
colored her hair and wings, and below are the tools i use to make the skin look like... well not flat., airbrush and a blender.
here i changed back to the other eyes, lmao, and started shading the body
i start with flat shade
i soften the edges with the blender.
and repeat till i get what i want.
this is how it looks like C:
i fill the eyes with red, add color to her tongue and little fangs
this is my fav part, i added glow to her eyes
and finished with some red glow on her body and hair. C: so she looks more "alive" now
I will be posting a speedpaint soon, and I honestly hope artists will start doing it too, it's a way to show that you are doing something with your own hands, something original. and no AI created.
thanks for reading. see you next time !
