Future Goat Mommies

These are our goats. Well, three out of four of them, anyway. We have to keep our buck, Dale Bob, put up by himself for right now. He's been in rut, so he has a tendency to get a little rough with the girls, and they are currently pregnant... so, I guess Dale Bob did his job.

This is Luna; or as I like to call her, Mammy Goat. She is the matriarch of our goat herd. She was one of our first two goats on the homestead, and she was pregnant when we got her. She had that baby year before last (you'll see her in a second), and she is due to have more very soon!

Little Debbie Cakes

This is Debbie. The she was the other goat that we got in our first pair. She is a year or two older than Mammy Goat, and she is pregnant for the second time. Unfortunately, her first pregnancy ended tragically when she gave birth to a stillborn kid last year. I'm not sure what happened, but the pregnancy terminated several weeks early. We're all hoping for a better experience this time around!

Gracie Goat

This is Gracie (with Debbie watching over her). Gracie was the baby that Mammy Goat was pregnant with when we brought her onto the farm. In fact, she was the very first baby animal (besides chickens) that we had born on the homestead! I think of the three, Gracie is probably the farthest along. In fact, we've already put her in a birthing stall, because we're expecting her to pop out a baby or two at any moment!

A Rare Moment

None of our goats are particularly cuddly. In fact, they're pretty skittish; especially Gracie. The other two, however, seem to be warming up to us a little. I don't know if it's because she's too pregnant to care or is she is actually starting to enjoy being petted, but Mammy Goat has been a lot more tolerant of human contact here lately. We've been feeding them a little more grain since we got the sheep, so I think that probably has a lot to do with it. Still, I can't imagine them getting up this close even just last year. Hopefully we'll be able to form better bonds with their kids. These goats are more or less just pets, although we hope to be able to get some milk from them someday. And, since they should be having these babies any day, we may get our wish sooner rather than later.
