He's a Keeper: T5 Van Engine REBUILT!

in #hive-18964129 days ago

Whilst Jamie drives the Landies, the VW T5 is my baby. She carries my boards, baskets of mushrooms, shopping, car parts, furniture. She takes me on mini adventures. She took me half way round Tassie on my own.

Two days after Dad left his earthly form, she broke down in the middle of rush hour traffic. What timing 😭😭

But I bet you know Jamie by now. He totally rebuilt the whole engine. Yep. Having never done a VW rebuild, he just rolled up his sleeves, ordered parts, rolled around in grease, greased up a few tshirts, and fixed it for a sum total of about $1600 of parts. We couldn't get a second hand one for less than 15k with same amount of mileage.

Please note he's NOT a mechanic by trade. He just loves mechanics. And he's very practical minded and determined - he breaks tasks down logically, reads, watches YouTube, talks to people, draws on prior experience and just fixes and builds shit like a BOSS.

Isn't that what DIY is all about?

So this post is a shout out to Jamie, who does spend an inordinate amount of his time sorting our shit out.

I absolutely let him buy wine to tonight.

With Love,

My husband was like that. He wasn't a mechanic either, but his dad was. He dad was certified for Rolls Royces. But my husband kept all the vehicles/engines/motors on everything working here on the farm.

You must miss him tinkering about 💕

Sigh…

My husband fixes our vehicles on his own. He only seldom goes to a real mechanic. 😁 He also watches YouTube tutorials as reference whenever anything needs fixing. 😁 It saves us a lot of money.

Omg it saves TONS of money! I can't believe how much!

Here's to Jamie! (Cheers with my first morning coffee). That was some serious money. Got to love a partner who can fix stuff. I didn't know a T5 by designation and before seeing the photo I has thinking - maybe River has got a 'hippie bullie' i.e. a T1 or T2 (had to look that up) nicely painted with surfer or mushroom themes.

Haha nope, ore a surfers van... Very common here on the coast. I'd love a t6 but Hive would need to moon!!!! I've had this van maybe ten years now and it was second hand when we bought it. She serves me well.

Hope you are well, @oceanbee !

So much to celebrate in this blog post! Must be a huge relief to have your car back up and running! Well Done Jamie! 👏❤️

It is! My van is me! I get he understands mechanical systems but it still blows my mind how he does it!

He's the true mechanic! In a world of 'getting a new one' true mechanics are becoming rare. Can you believe Shimano (bike parts manufacturer) tells us to get new brake calipers when their shit designs leak; they don't supply service parts. I get freaking mad! Glad the van is still serviceable.

Ah no that should be illegal! Same with phones when you can't swap out batteries. Repairing things SHOILD be an option.

Yup, there should exist some sort of 'right to repair'. They don't even need to supply the parts themselves, but just provide any industrial supplier (when it comes to rubber seals for brakes, for example). Their biggest fear is non-experienced ppl doing the service and then crashing -- which is kinda fair on their part --, but then again, it's the mechanic's fault not theirs

Fuck let people die.

Give ppl their liability back! I hate to be treated like an idiot (I am). At least I'm a responsible idiot \o and will take the punch when doing something shhhhhhhhhhctupid

I agree. We have people to spare anyway
