Today is Great Friday, considered to be the saddest holiday in Christian religion. On this day, we paint eggs for the Easter. In this post, I will show you how we did our eggs this year.
Before, we would do a lot of different things, techniques, colors and paints, but lately, last couple of years, we try to make it as natural as possible. Every year, beside "fancy" colored eggs, my grandma would make a traditional egg in the bulb (onion peel). I will help her, by finding the plants, different types of leaves.
That is not too hard, because even though it all looks just green, and like grass, you can find many interesting leaves and grass in only this little section.
Procedure is like this. You take the leaf, use water to stick it to the egg, warp it into the sock, and make it tight. After all are done, they are cooking in bulb.
Last year we did natural colors for eggs, but eggs were the white ones. This year we didn't buy those snowy white, so eggs were already yellowish and harder to take on color. Also, not all colors were success, so this year we did only turmeric and purple cabbage. They give yellow and blue, and a mix of those gives green.
For the technique, we wanted to try "marble" eggs. This is also done with bulb, but in a different way. This time we put bulb into the socks with eggs. Since we didn't have too much of white onion peel, we also added pieces of paper.
Since we didn't know how it will turn out to be, we picked a few other eggs for more techniques, so that we can see what is best to continue doing. We did one with rice, and also one with tape.
My sister watched the video about shiny/sparkly eggs made with wine. They have to sit for 24 hours, so we will see results of them tomorrow.
Other results are here. Marble eggs didn't look quite like marble, but they were very colorful and I loved them. Only problem was some parts of color were coming off (there was no bulb on it). But it still looked artsy.
Blue was much better than yellow as it was more visible. Rice egg was a fail, because we put too much rice and in water it was boiling and becoming bigger and covered almost the whole egg. One with tape was okay, but not so interesting.
Final thing is putting oil on them, to make them shine.
Painting eggs is a family tradition that I enjoy, and even though are eggs are not so fancy and colorful this year, I am glad we made them like this, using only natural ingridiends.
This is my post for the #hiveblopomo challenge.
