Driving through the rolling autumn-golden hills of the Midlands of Kwazulu Natal in search of The Loos of Blueberry Cafe on Netherwood Farm, brought more delights, and surprises, than just the loos - Blueberry Cafe, a wedding venue, chapel, brewery, self-catering cottages, and cows who peep into the loos;)
I later learned that Netherwood Farm was initially bought by a world-renowned heart surgeon, who actually performed my hubby's bypass surgery over 20 years ago, and recently a heart transplant for a close friend's son.
The good doc always wanted to own a farm, a retreat from his stressful job, and is interested in breeding cattle.
He obviously employed the right people to manage the various aspects of the farm, and they now breed Ankole, or 'designer cows' as he calls them.
Getting lyrical about loos, and a farm in the middle of nowhere, sounds quite crazy, but take a peek at that blog and you'll see why.
The silence, fresh country air, magical views of the Drakensberg mountain range on the horizon, the kitchen vegetable garden, the decor, the food, and the magical ambiance hit us when we stepped out of our car in the parking lot.
Much of the produce is made right here on the farm, or sourced from local producers - baked goods, homemade candies, preserves, oils, coffee, honey, cheese, smoked meats, and much more.
So, I invite you to come shopping with me.
Honey, some I've never heard of - Pomela, Velvety & Raw Saligna, as well as Aloe.
The cafe gets its name from a wild orchard of Blueberries, so it's no wonder that one finds all kinds of produce with Blueberries - here we have Blueberries Gin and Rum.
A bird's 'nest' filled with colourful eggs and 100% Arabica city roast Coffee that I had to take home.
A slice of their famous Cheesecake, and some Koeksisters, although the latter is @fionasfavourites specialty, and I'm sure they don't taste anything like hers! Crispy on the outside, dipped in a thick syrup, a traditional South African treat.
The best handmade Nougat still is Wedgewood, my favourite is the Macadamia nut; all beautifully packaged for gifts.
A mishmash of preserves, homemade candies, jams and jellies, oils, salad dressings, and more.
Now for the savoury goods - Nguni Mayo - zesty Lemon, Sundried Tomato and Honey Mustard.
Rocket or Basil Pesto, Marinated Feta, Feta stuffed Jalapenos, Red or Green Chilli
The many faces of bottled Feta - Capers, Olives, Marinated, and Salads.
Pickled Onions and Jams alongside each other - the best whole Apricot jam I've ever tasted, a gift from my bestie @artywink who knows my weaknesses.
I hope you've enjoyed all the delicacies from Blueberry Cafe, as part of my contribution to one of the sweetest ladies here on Hive, @dswigle, who this week shared Market Friday Presents: A Tale of Tulips, something I hope to see the tail end of when we get to our son on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
HAPPY MARKET FRIDAY FRIENDS
