Woodpecker is the most colorful and beautiful bird and is hardly seen as it climbs up and down the tree quickly. Around 240 species of Woodpeckers exist in the world and roughly around 20 species are threatened to extinct. In Pakistan more than 12 species of woodpeckers exist and following are some of the species that I captured during my birding in Margalla Hills, Islamabad. Hope you like it.
Scaly-bellied woodpecker
The scaly-bellied woodpecker is very common and It is found in all over subcontinent. In Islamabad they are found in Margalla hills. In scaly-bellied woodpecker specie males and females are distinguished by different color of their heads male has red and female has black color.
Black-Rumped Flameback
The black-rumped flameback or lesser golden-backed woodpecker or lesser goldenback are very common and can also be seen in urban areas. The black-rumped flameback is mostly found in all over subcontinent.
Brown Fronted Woodpecker
The brown-fronted woodpecker is also a common specie in Margalla hills, Islamabad. They are mostly found on lower-to-middle altitudes of Himalayas. The brown-fronted woodpecker is not very shy, if you get succeed to spot this bird on tree then you can easily photograph it.
Fulvous-Breasted Woodpecker
The fulvous-breasted woodpecker specie is not very common in Margalla hills, Islamabad. It is difficult to spot this bird and I only photographed this bird once. Since then I am still waiting for another close shot of this gorgeous bird.
Speckled Piculet
Pakistan's smallest woodpecker is Speckled Piculet. I saw this bird more than once but could not photograph it. As this bird is tiny and fast. Finally I succeeded to photograph it. This photograph is not showing its true colors but in future I will try to capture it closely.
