Construction - root cellar door finished crop Jan. 2023.jpg

The contractor arrived at 3PM on Wednesday and he first got the root cellar door finished. Then he touched up the pipe insulation in hopes of stopping the condensation. We determined I didn’t have a long enough drill bit to do the new thermometer so we just left it for Friday. He thinks he might have one.

He thought we should touch up all the cut edges of the wire shelves because they’d be in the more humid root cellar. So we filed them to get the sharp edges off and then I coated them and put them back in place.

Somehow I ended up with 8 more shelves than there were places for. Can’t figure that one out…

There were some finishing touches needed for the squash boxes. The hardware cloth edges hadn’t been adequately covered to prevent hand injury when moving them to clean.

The doors needed hooks to keep them shut tight.

They were finally done and put into place, ready to be loaded with the squash that’s still on the back porch. I’ve been lucky this year so far and it’s not gotten too cold out there.

My general helper will help me on Thursday, lining the bottom of each box and then moving the squash into them.

On Friday the contractor will start making new shelves for the little unit left of the boxes while my tenant digs out the gravel so supports can be put in for the new shelves at the other end of the room.

I hope to finish the root cellar in the next month or so. Then we can prepare the freezer room for freezers, and as soon as the ground is solid in spring, move the 3 freezers out of the barn.
