Back Home, Attempted Rest Day, String Mower, Garden, Trailer, Grilling - Sunday

in #hive-114308last year

Yesterday was my first day back after my California trip and I was wanting to not do much of anything all day to try and recuperate from my crazy past 10 days. Despite my best intentions I couldn't help but try to get some things done. The first thing I had to do was wash my incredibly dirty clothes. I hadn't washed while down there and just stuffed them in my bag to do here. I think I only killed one with too much dirt and grease and stuff as the others still look semi presentable.

I finished unpacking the truck and pulled the doors out of the case. I then did a walk around of the gardens. Thanks to @stryeyz and the boys for working on the grass in the strawberries. The cabbage are doing ok but the far left row is giving me troubles again and not growing anything for much of it.

The greenhouse is going amazing and I have to spend a bunch of time trimming the cucumbers of all the runners that are exploding in the row. The tomatoes need the same treatment to get them to be less overtakey and more under control. The peppers are growing really well and I am super stoked that the lettuce and carrots are coming along really well.

The cabbage is doing really well and the beans are flowering and starting to produce.

It was after noon when I finally got my string mower unboxed and running. I am really happy with it and the handle adjusts so the boys will be able to push it around the farm. It is also super nice to not have to wear pants, earplugs, and my helmet to cut the grass like with the weedeater.

I rolled it down to below the potato garden by the creek and made some passes with it to see how it deals with one of the thicker areas of weeds on the farm. It did quite well and is going to take me a bit of getting used to it. It is a lot different than swinging the weedeater and I have no judge of time frame yet for how much I can get done per hour. The string is a lot thicker and the motor is much bigger spinning it so I am hoping that it will end up faster and easier than the weedeater.

J got the fire going in afternoon and then I built it up some more so I would have enough coals for grilling our steaks.

Before grilling though I had to get the truck dealt with. The topper had to come off which is fairly easy though the thing is pretty heavy and awkward to move alone. I got it set aside then hooked up the trailer for my grain run I have been on this morning already.

The peas have some large enough to pic and we got about 2 handfuls after R went in to get more after I picked some.

The steaks got grilled and came out delectable along with the rice and brussel sprouts.

The potato garden is kicking ass. The right 2 rows were largely pieces of potato that I planted BUT the middle row was all just the tendrils with no potato attached. If you look at a potato that has grown out tendrils you will see little nubs at the base where it is attached to the potato, those are root nubs and they grow. They probably won't produce near what the other rows will but they will still produce something. I am quite anxious to see just how much of a difference there will be come harvest time.

My skin actually mellowed enough that I could soak. It felt good on my really sore back and the theracane helped to beat up some of the knots. Stayed up way too late though as I am pretty tired this morning after the little sleep I got.

I have been to town already for grain and it was WAY too late in the morning, there was already assholes all over the roads. I have to go empty the barrels in a bit, I have the mowing to do, green house to work in, weeds to pull in the gardens, and I am going to go do some kiting at the school when the winds pickup today.

Resting after a trip always seems like a great idea, but it rarely happens!Looks as if the garden behaved itself in your absence.

Your garden is beautiful
Please, how did you manage to plant them on rows?

I laid out the rows in the plastic and cut the holes in straight lines. This is the first year I have done it "correctly".

When a person comes back to work from vacation, there is bound to be a little trouble one day and then everything is back to normal. Your food looks so tasty.
