Fermented Kitchen - Photographs of a New Kitchen

I cannot believe that it is almost two years ago when I made this post of the dad and I rebuilding the kitchen. I pulled the ultimate "douchebag" move and got a girlfriend and subsequently could not help him finish (long-distance relationships have their own mechanics). He continued and I helped as I came back to visit and to teach at the university. But after so many years of breaking out bits and pieces, my mother declared yesterday that the kitchen is finally done.

I am by no means an interior (home) photographer. I am more of an artistic portrait and wildlife photographer. But I tried to take some photographs of the finished kitchen before leaving again for the long-distance relationship. But even @urban.scout helped with the kitchen. She painted, what I believe, is her best-ever painting and together we made a frame without power tools (because our country does not have power when you need it plus it was an ode to my grandfather who gave me the hand tools to make things like frames).

Making things with your own hand has its own unique feeling. It makes you feel worthy. In our age of mass production and people making things for you, it can instill the feeling that nothing can be done by yourself. The dad and I always feel like we accomplished something when we make it, even if it is only something very small and inconsequential. I have handmade and bound various books for @urban.scout and this always instills the same level and feeling of accomplishment in me.

So please come along as I showcase to you the new kitchen that took the dad and I almost 3-5 years to make! Everything was made from scratch, even the lattices (back-breaking work!).

Postscriptum, or Symmetry in Chaos

Even though the kitchen is new, our chaos has come with it. It was the perfect opportunity to get rid of the old and enter the new. But this is not always possible. Life presents itself with a bunch of opportunities, sometimes not always the best and most conducive for thought which is needed to through things away. So we just add until that moment when you are forced to sort it out! All is fun and games.

For now, my parents are enjoying the kitchen. It is much better than the old one which was very small (due to way too many cupboards) and other unnecessary things.

In any case, I hope you enjoyed this post about the kitchen! It was a little bit of a fun experiment and as always a play with natural light. It is winter and the sun constantly hides itself behind the clouds. So the light is not always that good, but this afternoon, with some of the shots, the light was very soft and in my opinion perfect.

For now, happy photographing, and stay well.

The musings in this post are my own, and the photographs as well. They were taken with my trusty old Nikon D300 and 50mm Nikkor lens.
