Playing with Patterns

in #hive-1279116 months ago

As said in my first post in the community, I decided to transition to pattern drafting from the freehand I learned from my boss.
Yes, I had a physical tailor shop I started learning from and my boss is quite good but what she was giving was low compared to what I envisioned to learn. So I started looking for better alternatives online while I was still learning want I could physically. I learned to read patterns but it wasn't like I should pay for a detailed class.
In the course of seeking for more knowledge, I came across how to take a clients measurements properly and transfer the same to the fabric or pattern paper.

Long story shortened, I was able to get a detailed class last year and my dream is becoming a reality. From the videos, I saw how I could draft patterns and manipulate them to my taste. So I bought pattern papers and drafted a lot of styles I never tried before though I don't have fabrics to transfer them to. Here are some patterns I've drafted

One of the patterns became useful when a close friend invited me to her wedding. I searched through my already drafted patterns. I decided on sewing a straight bustier gown with yoke. The upper bodice had the major work, the skirt part is straight. I was inspired by the works of a fashion tutor online and I loved it. My readiness to make another dress that is quite different from the ones I had also motivated me to choose the dress pattern.

It's a bustier dress with yoke.
I didn't want it to look just like this so I had to manipulate it to satisfaction. My desire was to show off some skin in a reasonable way. Revealing my cleavage is out of the picture so I chose to reveal my back.
This is the outcome on paper.

I transferred to fabric and added the necessary sewing allowances.
The dress code was white and navy blue with gold.

I chose chord lace for the yoke and one of the sleeves and another plain fabric for the remaining part

Sewing the dress especially the top was stressful. It was my first time of sewing a yoke. I wanted to make a fashion statement as a designer. I loosened stitches many times. At some points I took a picture and sent to a friend for clarification.
I didn't know what I wanted for the sleeve before I started sewing but I was hopeful I'll get the full picture while I made the dress.

I don't have the complete process of the dress but I have the complete dress.

I had to go get myself together when it seemed like things were falling apart. So I've not been sewing for a while now.

The available fabric determined my choice of sleeves; a pencil sleeve on the right and a puff sleeve on the left.
I wore a rose gold 2" block heels and a navy blue head wrap and a bracelet.
I tied the head wrap myself and I believe it's beautiful. 😊😊

My excitement knew no bounds when I wore the dress as I don't really attend social gatherings. It was my joy to put on my own handwork.

All pictures are mine

Thanks for reading through.
It's Friday ❤️❤️❤️
