Micro Balcony Garden Journal 2024 - Aug 4 /

in #hive-1406354 months ago

After a busy week of traveling and being away from home, I finally had a relaxing morning on my balcony today. It rained last night, leaving the air fresh, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee while seeing the plants.

Before I left home, tomatoes were just starting to turn color, and now they are a beautiful, ripe red, ready to be picked. I resisted the urge to harvest them immediately and took some photos for my garden journal instead. Then, I enjoyed them for breakfast on sourdough bread I bought at the local market yesterday. Pure bliss! I must say, these tomatoes were perfect—juicy and bursting with the robust flavor of summer. The basil is also from the balcony 😊

However, I'm not quite sure which variety this tomato is. But since it tastes so good, I’m not too concerned. It seems to be thriving on my balcony, so I plan to save some seeds for next year.

The largest tomato plant is also a bit of a mystery. The label says it's a Paul Robson, a traditional American black large tomato, but it looks more like a Green Zebra with its green stripes. The fruits are still firm, so I need to wait a bit longer to be sure.

Some of my other tomato plants have grown quite tall, so I added a few more stakes to support them. I’m looking to snacking micro tomatoes with my daughter on balcony as we do every summer.

Summer tomatoes are truly wonderful. I dream of someday having a rooftop balcony office where I can grow as many tomatoes as I want, and host tasting parties for family and friends.

For all you tomato lovers, here’s one of my favorite tomato-themed song 😊 I love tomatoes, I love tomatoes ~ 🍅

Other than tomatoes, summer vines are also doing well. The first morning glory flower is about to bloom, which I planted alongside the bitter melon to keep it company with colors.

Inspired by @aitommylr’s bush beans, I planted some too. I thought they were bush variety, but it turns out they are climbers. They’ve started to climb up the bitter melon’s threads. Gardening is full of delightful surprises, which I like a lot 😉

The bitter melon is growing taller, but there are no female flowers yet. Since the seeds I planted first didn’t germinate, it got a late start this year, so I’ll just wait patiently.

Oh, and I had a surprise when I got home. Last week, I wrote about a chubby green caterpillar that devoured my German traditional palm kale seedlings. This week, it’s the wasabi plant…! My 10-euro wasabi plant…😭 I’m holding out hope that new leaves might grow back.

Fortunately, the Italian black kale survived, so I decided to protect it properly by covering it with mesh fabric.

Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday. Happy gardening!

P.S. Thanks to Hive Garden friends and everyone who upvotes my Sunday gardening journal, I was able to save $275 for my Hive Fest ticket.

I love tomatoes, I love tomatoes ~ 🍅

Happy gardening!

It's quite astonishing what you can produce on your balcony! I hope you get that rooftop garden soon.
That tomato song is going to be in my head all day. I never heard a tomato song before.

Wow! I’m happy to receive a comment from you, @gardenhive, one of my most favorite communities on hive. Yes, the tomato song stick to my mind and when it’s gone, my daughter asks me to play it 😆

And thank you for your kind comment to my roof top garden dream. Now I can believe in I make it after receiving your and @damla’s comments 💪

The tomatoes look so beautiful 🧿 you’re right to resist the urge to harvest them right away. The breakfast with the added sourdough bread also looks very appetizing. From here it looks like bruschetta. Sometimes in the mornings I don’t want to eat anything, so I guess I should look at this photo then 😊 I hope your rooftop balcony dreams come true and you grow as many tomatoes as you wish. 🤗

Yes I also need something light especially for summer breakfast. Thank you for encouraging my roof top dream 😉 I try my best to make it!
