I've made something for the first time

I really do not like crafting and making stuff as I consider myself non creative. Stuff is functional designing and making something new in there is not easy (and fun) at all.

But you know nights were long and Netflix became boring and (I am not kidding you) Instagram started giving me crochetting reels on stuff you can make. Did they notice I am an old hag nowadays and just start giving you unwanted advice? But easy to overwin as I am, I decided this might just be the side hobby I would like to do.

And after all...if all of these Instagram housewives can do this without breaking a sweat, so can I right?

So I went to the local handy craft store and this whole new world of yarn and hooks opened up to me. I got this idea of crochetting the perfect beanie because beanies are awesome but they never are perfect. Why not make one my own? So I get me two crochetting hooks and some fluffy yarn to start with. And what did I start with? With Youtube and watching tutorials on making beanies.

But I haven't ever crochetted in general, so when there was spoken about a crochet stich or a half crochet, this sounded like spanish to me. Watchies clips in Dutch was even worse, with een 'halve steek overslaan half stokje' language this was even worse than the tutorial for sailing. This sounded like more someone had some kind of stroke.

Back to the drawing table....

Maybe...Just maybe

Maybe a beanie was a bit to enthusiastic to start with in the first place. So I shifted my focus and turned into making a scarf. Nice and straight and easy and all the same over and over.

But then it turned out that my hooks didn't fit my yarn. I had 3 and 4 hooks and 6 yarn, so back for a new hook, because I really like the fluffy yarn.

After my start I was starting to get the hang of it actually. I picked up the pace and made some nice progress. But I was still glitching in how tight it was every line so I loosened up the tension a bit and that is when I got lost.

Because then I went on putting some extra loops and all of a sudden after putting in some extra rows...my scarf looked like a triangle, becoming wider and wider. Oopsie!

Time to start over.

So after the rookie mistakes of the wrong hook, not counting the stitches and most likely every other in there as well, again I was making good progress and I got the hang of it.

After some rainy days and about 2.5 meters of scarf later, it was finished and time to make it together in a circle scard which was really easy and needed no tutorials.

The result?

Actually I am super happy with this thing and it is even cooler that I made it myself. Was it easy? Actually yes, but I am sure that a pro-crochetter can spot my mistakes in a second in there.

Next project ...the beanie ofcourse! But first a small break to find the motivation back again. Or will this remain a winter thing and will all yarn be put away when the spring reaches?

Sort:

I'm impressed. Last time I tried knitting I had pms and got so frustrated I threw it across the room.

Heheheh I know this feeling indeed. When I found out that my version 1 was starting to look like a triangle I got really really mad. But knitting is a different ballgame there even. Good stuff for in a plane though?

Nope, I totally have draw a line under anything to do with string and needles. Fuck that. Good on you though!

Awwwww..... it's so good!

Also, who cares if you made mistakes... is it warm, yes, is it cute, also yes.

Exactly! That is the way to go. It looks damn cute and this stuff is fluffy and really nice to wear!
