Hello guys! I Hope you all doing great.
So I decided to service my generator after a while , before I proceed, I will like to share a brief history about the generator. It was bought more than six years ago, still working fine and never had a major repair(this is because it has been serviced and maintained well),it is a SUMEC FIRMAN SPG3000E2 Petrol generator.The picture and specifications are shown below respectively;
I do service it every three months since it works probably almost everyday.Nigeria power supply has not been stable so people opt for an alternative i.e electric generator, solar power and so on.
WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC GENERATOR?
Electric generator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through the means of induction. There are different types of generator with are gasoline/petrol generator, diesel generator, solar generator, gas generator and so on.
SERVICING AND MAINTENANCES
Servicing means performing maintenance on something while maintenance is the act of carrying out some preventive steps to prevent failure. It is very important in machine to ensure maximum optimization. I recommend we service generator every three months if it is been used frequently.
IMPORTANT OF SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE
The following are the importance of servicing and maintenance of a machine;
- It extends the life span of the machine
- It prevents failures of the machine
- It prevents damages to the machine
- It increases the efficiency of the machine
- It gives reliability of the machine while in operation
- It helps to save resources
- It gives inspection and detailed reports of the machine.
APPARATUS NEEDED FOR SERVICING A GENERATOR.
The following are tools and equipment needed for servicing a generator
- Sets of Spanner
- Fresh/new engine oil
- New air filter
- New spark plug
- Plug wrench
- Bowl
- Brush
- Funnel
STEPS IN SERVICING OF GENERATOR
- I turn ON the generator for about 10 minutes to thin the oil and loosen any particles in the engine block
- I loosed the drain plug
- I placed a bowl under the loosed drain plug and drain the oil into the bowl( picture of the leaked engine oil is shown below)
- I tightened the drain plug
- I poured some amount of fresh engine oil into the generator through the dipstick hole.
- I loosed the drain plug and drain the oil(this will ensure the contaminated/old oil has been drained completely)
- I tightened the drain plug and poured the fresh oil making sure it was not excess or low by checking the dip stick indicator
- I removed the spark plug cap
- I loosed the plug with the plug wrench
- I took out the old spark plug and replaced it with a new one.
- I tighten the new plug into it hole by the use of plug wrench and covered it with the spark plugs cap
- I unclip the air filter housing and remove the air filter
- I changed the air filter with a new one
- I clipped the air filter housing back
- I inspected the fuel filter, fuel valve pet cock, fuel pipe and I checked for leakages. It was all okay.
- I used brush and petrol to clean the dusty part of the generator except from the alternator and leave to dry for 30 minutes.
- I start the engine for 5 minutes and check the oil level (if the oil level is high or low you will have to reduce or increase the oil respectively)
-I test run the generator and was working fine, not making noise like before.
