A couple weekends ago, a fellow Lineman needed a bunch of help pouring a massive concrete slab in his shop. Anyone who has done concrete knows, you can lose an entire pour if you don’t get certain things done in a timely manner. Especially when you are pouring the floor of a 50’X60’ shop.
About 3 weeks ahead of big concrete pour, he asked around looking for some help… before anyone could answer he answered, “Yes, there will be ice cold beers in ice chests” A Lineman rarely turns that offer down. You can get a Lineman to do some back breaking manual labor… all it will cost you is some beer on ice.
The first concrete truck was scheduled to show up at 8am. There were 5 Lineman coworkers waiting to spread that concrete around, along with 3 professional concrete guys.
The Truck is Here
With the guidance of a few professional concrete guys, we quickly picked up on what exactly needed to be done. We told them, “Just tell us what you want done and consider it done” They shared some tips and tricks on how to get this big pile of wet concrete spread out and leveled.
One thing was for certain, we were all glad he put 14’ tall doors on his shop. That was the concrete truck could pull all the way in and reach the back corners of the shop. We would have been wheelbarrowing it around for hours!!
After the second truck left, the pros didn’t really have to babysit anymore. Instead they started teaching us the technique of creating a level spot and using a 2x4 to level the concrete around it. This way they could get to smoothing the out the last trucks pour with a trowel on the end of a long pole. I’m sure it has a name and they told us but I have slept since then…
By the time the 3rd truck load was done, this shop floor was really starting to look good. Granted there was still a ton of work to do to finish it but it has came a long way from a big pile of mud
I believe in total this floor was close to 40 cubic yards of concrete. Each truck holds 10 cubic yards and the last of the 4 trucks was just shy of a full load.
The finishing process isn’t something just anybody can do. That was left to the pros to handle. They did teach us how to hand trowel the front edge of the shop by the doors while they started working on the main floor
