A tiny DIY planter

in #hive-189641last year

No plastic waste has been my policy for the last decade or so. However there are things you buy that come in plastic containers. We had a numberof shampoo bottles lying around the house, I had just cut them to size and used them as planters for years. However, when left out in the sun, these tend break and leave a lot of tiny bits of plastic lying around.

Continers I had made a couple of years ago

It was then I decided to decorated them to make them look special while making the containers last longer. Some of these have lasted me for three years and still going. (I had uploaded some of these pictures a long time ago on Hive) Regardless there were the cut tops of these bottles lying around. These were 'small' I mean tiny, they didn't have a flat bottom and couldn't be used on their own as planters. I had to come up with something, just throwing them away would again make the landfills even taller.

There were a lot of pain spray bottles caps that were lying around, the caps could make wonderful stands for these boat like cut bottle tops I thought. Hence I came up with a plan for a simple, sturdy planter.

I traced the outline on the cap, after making a small hole I cut out the circle in the middle with a sharp knife.

Since the shampoo bottle comes with a pump that cap couldn't be used to close the bottom, I found another one which suited this in my plastic collection.

I inserted the top of the shampoo bottle into the cap and voilà I have a tiny planter which is majestically mounted on a stand. I screwed on the other cap into the bottom and made some holes for drainage with a heated soldering iron.

I just left this contraption as it was hoping to plant something into it in the evening when I go up to the terrace garden. Then we had a plumbing accident, there was a small leakage and I had to use the sealant to fix the leakage. I kind of mixed up a little more of the water proof sealant than required. As I was lying in bed I got this brain wave to decorate this planter with the left over sealant .

Sorry I didn't record the process completely because I wasn't thinking about writing this. I just rolled the sealant into thin small rolls and shaped them to look like grass. I looked into my collection of crap I've collected and found this flower which was part of a hair band for my dog (my dog is a shiz tsu). Then I found a few animals I had made with some tile sealant a long time ago so I picked out one and used it for my scenery. This is how I assembled it.

After the first coat of paint this is how it looks. I painted another layer and sprayed it with some clear varnish.

This evening I planted some baby's tears plants into this container and here is how it looks now (refer to thumb nail image) I am so thrilled now as I have many container tops lying around which I could put to good use now. Size isn't really an issue I figured. No more plastic wastage!

I hope you like my quick and simple fix it DIY.
