My son hasn't lived with us for seven years now but his old room hasn't changed much at all. It's a bit of a storage room which doubles as my room, as my husband and I struggle to sleep together. Last week we decided to clean it up, paint, and finally get a new bed and mattress. As you can see, it was quite cluttered and dingy, which is very unlike me.
The more we removed things, the more we realised how bad it was, being so dusty and the walls being stained and dirty. It's hard to tell with the curtains shut half the time but trust me, it was a mess. We took out the king bed as it was heavy and bulky, and the mattress stained and broken. We had been given it years ago and it was definitely ready to go.
We had a heap of ceiling and wall paint from doing the rest of the house two years ago so it didn't feel like we were spending a heap of money. And of course by doing it ourselves we saved a ton too. If we do decide to sell it was definitely going to add value to the place too.
Two coats of paint made a massive difference. It was hard to believe how bright and clean it felt. Inspired, I decided to paint the ensuite as well, listening to the Stones Exile on Main Street which I hadn't listened to in a long time. It made me paint twice as fast 🤣. I also painted over the ceiling in the kitchen where it was stained with that exploding cherry kombucha... Oops.
But back to the bedroom...
Next step was the bedbase. I've never bought a new base before and I did look around at second hand beds but nothing was right. This was a Temple and Webster bed for $180 AUD which was a bargain really - you couldn't make it for cheaper. It seemed sturdy and well made.
We went for a double as it made the room seem bigger and I don't need more than that to sleep in on my own. It took Jamie 35 minutes to put together and was very easy to do so.
The next day my mattress arrived. It's only the second new mattress I have ever bought. I bought the Ecosa Vital mattress of medium firmness. It was $600 on sale, but they give you a ten year warranty and a 100 day trial. If you don't like it they give it to charity which is fantastic. Considering new mattresses cost thousands I was happy to pay this. For the first time in a long time I used some hard earned Hive money to pay for it - I've been saving for a long time! I still can't believe I had slept for o long on that old bed. Honestly I was at the end of my tether with it and was so desperate to change it.
It came in a big box on wheels, and as I opened it it hissed as the air escaped and within a minute it was on the bed. So cool. It was amazing I could do this on my own as mattresses can be pretty unwieldy.
The bedside drawers I had picked up for a fiver and painted, and although I'd planned to sell them, they worked in the light and bright space I'd created.
The added bonus is now the bed is the other way around, I can look out the window from bed in the morning at the gum trees. It feels so much more peaceful.
I'm not really used to a medium mattress and think I'll exchange it for a firm down the track. But it'll definitely be better for my asthma and general sleep hygiene. Right now I don't want to get out of bed, if I'm honest!!
