Rickety, worn, torn, and weathered, with a big sinkhole in the seat, is an apt description of an old chair that holds sentimental value, looked like.
I can easily let go of stuff I have no use for if someone else needs it. However, this sentimental piece was what I needed to complete my Oregon Pine dining room table after I sacrificed two of its chairs for the desk-to-table conversion for my BnB cottage.
My table now only had four matching chairs, with two odd wooden chairs at the head and foot of my table.
One chair was...
Rickety, worn, torn, and weathered, with a big sinkhole in the seat!
I was not going to let it die a sudden death, so I started dismantling the seat to see why there was such a big sinkhole. Broken pieces of hardwood came tumbling out, with the most awful ancient stuffing.
I was so horrified that I forgot to take a photo at that early stage. I was not even sure if we could save the chair!
The velvet upholstery fabric was faded and torn, and the fabric underneath did not look good.
I kind of challenged myself not to spend a cent on this conversion, and had to settle for grey upholstery fabric I had in my cupboard, courtesy of my son's girlfriend who left behind a ton of fabric when they emigrated. She used to repurpose old furniture, hence her big collection. It is not quite the right colour for the old chair, but it had to do!
Bonginkosi repaired the seat using hardboard from the garage, and sponge from a camping mattress that had hardly been used by my son.
The seat frame had a ton of nail marks in it, obviously had been re-upholstered a couple of times over the years.
He also strengthened the frame so it's no longer rickety, way more sturdy.
Poe refused to move, pretending to be snoozing on the cold tile floor - it was a tad warm for a winter's day!
Bonginkosi and I enjoyed revamping this old chair that brought back happy memories and I saved quite a few pennies by not having to buy one odd chair to complete my dining table set!
The other odd chair is at the foot of the table, not a bad match.
Cost for this revamp: a couple of hours of fun, and ZAR 0.00
