Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share something that I learned a few years ago when it comes to once Christmas is over!

DIY Inexpensive Christmas Lights Organization

Christmas being the wonderful time of year that it is, is good in some other ways because it doesn't last forever. As much as I enjoy it when it comes around, I don't know if I would enjoy it if it was every day of the year lol. It feels good in a way to pack the decorations up and put them away for the year, to be brought out in 11 more months!

One of the things that I came up with myself, which I'm sure thousands of other people do because it's really not that complicated, was an easy way to organize the Christmas lights so that you don't get a big ball of a knot like in Christmas Vacation lol

One of the things I as well as most other people have these days are boxes around the house! Boxes used to be for special things but now that mail delivery is what it is and we order most things off the internet, we tend to get a hell of a lot of boxes! That's okay with me! Lol that means I recycle a lot but I also use a lot for other random things like this!

The type of cardboard I use for this particular job is the stuff that you get with bigger boxes since the string of lights is usually many feet long, using a small box is just a pain and doesn't help. I typically use the long sides of the box rather than the ends or the bottom/top. Really the easy way to start this is to make a little notch in the corner of the piece of cardboard.

The notch is now used for securing the end of the string of lights to the cardboard so we can get to wrapping it around! It's pretty easy and efficient, you just have to get started the right way otherwise you will end up having to take it apart and do it over.

What I mean by doing it right is that you should string the lights up and down the box but don't get the cord all twisted up and into knots! Be kind to your cords! One of the things I learned from my dad was that we have to be kind to our cords. Don't force it to twist or bend in a certain direction because the cord is telling you it doesn't want to go that way lol. If you allow the cord to rotate to where it wants to be and then do the wrapping around the piece of box here you will allow the cord a heck of a lot longer of a lifespan where it does what it wants to do because that was how it was formed in the factory.

Once you get started, wrapping them gets completed pretty quickly! What I love the most about this method as well is that it is easy to get these put into a box and not take up a really considerable amount of room. Throwing the lights into a box or tote without any organization to it ends up wasting more space because it just bunches up and then you're in for a headache when you go to take it all out when you're excited for the next Christmas season.

Hope you enjoyed it and learned a little bit with this! I was really glad that I thought of it a few years ago and I've been using it ever since! My dad even does this for his lights which is cool, he's really stubborn about new things lol

Ah, I have to do this! Before my wife starts packing the lights!

It's such a good step that makes organization 10x easier and taking them out next year is a piece of cake! Glad you like it!

As a happy hater of Christmas, I will never use this but I bet my mom would have loved this. Way better than her method of balling them up.

Hahah I’m glad that you see the utility of it despite disliking Christmas! It is handy lol

Even in Pakistan, when there is a memory or a connection with a marriage etc., we also decorate with such lights. They have various functions in them that make the latte automatically change and look great. Here too, people take them off after a few days. And then use it on the next event.

That’s great! I’m happy to learn a little bit about culture in a place like Pakistan! Thanks for sharing this, that’s a good thing you guys do for celebrations.

Your are most welcome.

That is a fantastic idea! I think I need to do that this year. I hate, hate, hate putting away/putting up/fucking with Christmas lights. Love how they look! But I'd rather deal with a moody, hormonal teenager than have to mess with Christmas lights. This could definitely help.

That’s good I’m glad to have been of service lol. Anything to help speed up the clearing of it is good!

What simple yet very neat idea. We haven't brought out the 'big' green corded Christmas lights in years and I love my little fairy drops on a string/wire better for indoors. Next time we do I'll be sure to use this method.

Yeah I know the ones you’re taking of! My parents had those and I love them but they are an effort lol these ones are little LED ones and lighter and easier to put away. It was a nifty thing that I figured out for sure!
