I have recently started my own business selling Jam that I make from home. I’ve been experimenting with various flavours and the results have been fantastic! Now it’s time to offload a whole lot of stock and last week I got invited to be a part of an indoor Market taking place today.
I have never been a trader at a market before so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. I was told that the table would be provided but to bring anything that I needed to display my goods.
Pear & Cranberry Jam
Apple & Cinnamon Jam
I spent some time this week cooking Pear & Cranberry jam and Apple & Cinnamon jam in preparation for the weekend. Both turned out beautifully and the Apple and Cinnamon tastes like an apple pie in a jar. Hmmmmmmm!
My Jam Pantry
My daughter joined me this morning so we quickly packed the car with 3 boxes full of jam in 10 flavours.
By 9am we were set up and ready to go! Unfortunately it turned into a very quiet day of chatting to the other few traders that had turned up. It seems that doing a market on the weekend before payday is a bad idea…
I managed to sell 10 jars of jam which was more sales than anyone else made. It was less than I had hoped for, but better than nothing I guess.
I ended up spending half the money I made to buy dinner for tonight from another vendor. If you’ve ever heard of a South African meal called BABOTIE then you know what I’m talking about. It’s a a curried mince that either has raisins or apricots cooked into the mince and then baked with a layer of egg and a couple bay leaves.
Babotie is delicious and although it’s not too difficult to make at home I don’t tend to make it often, but when a wonderful grandmother from the market has made it with love, then it’s absolutely worth buying.
This evening, after the very uneventful market, we enjoyed the Babotie with rice and huge dollop of chutney, and now everything feels better. It was a tasty wonderful end to the day.
Now I’m preparing for my next outdoor market next weekend and I’m ready to take it on with guns blazing!
