Hello everyone! Today I am going to share the drawing process of a character that I found to be interesting. This is a portrait drawing of her in colour pencils. She is actually a character in a game story I have been playing for a while now. The game application is called Romance Club. The story she was in is called Theodara.
It is a story that is set in the vintage time of the olden days. I really liked that because the background of the story often has vintage items and the characters wear such outfits as well. Even the names and food items are of vintage times. Rosetta is not the main character but Theodara is. She is a journalist who struggles to make a mark and finds herself in unfortunate twists of life.
About Madam Rosetta
Here's a short introduction about the character I drew. But before that, I would like to let you know that there may be spoilers in this so feel free to skip this part in case you plan on playing the game. Madam Rosetta is a famous host of an entertaining stage show that only the VIPs attend with special invitation. She keeps it discreet so even the most famous newspapers and journalists can't track her down.
She is quite strict with her performers and is very particular on the quality of the dance performances and singing as well. Her staffs often get scolded when they don't do well. A part of the story goes back to the flashback of her where they show a younger version of her, full of dreams but it was shattered as she got into a mess when she was in a relationship with a bad man. He beat her up when he found she was pregnant.
Nevertheless she had the baby but abandoned her child and moved to the cities to follow her dreams. She also did other selfish things to make her mark in the world including murdering a man. I chose to draw her because she is a complicated character as she also did some good things like saving a young girl from a prostitution ring. Finally she made amends when her grown daughter came back for revenge.
Tools and Materials
- a sketchbook
- a HB pencil to draw
- a dust free eraser
- colour pencils
The Process
I wanted to use the grid method to get the proportions right. So, I first used a mobile art app in order to put grids on my picture and then drew the grids on my paper as well.
I always start portraits with the outline of the face, or rather the head. This gives me the correct proportion to work with so I can draw the rest of the features with much more ease.
I drew her features here like her eyes, nose and mouth. I drew a different kind of outfit compared to the one she wore in the game so it looks more casual.
I erased all the grid lines in prep of the colouring.
I started colouring using an orange peach shade for her skin. By the way, the colour I am using is Staedler Luna, which is the one on the right of the sketchbook. These colours of mine are really old and are about a decade old. But they still colour well.
I tried my best to smoothen the first layer.
Then, using the same colour, I coloured it with more pressure on some areas of shadows. This has more to do with creating a guide so that it will be more convenient for me to layer other colours on the shadows.
Then, I used mustard orange shade to emphasize on the shades.
I used orange for the next layer.
Finally I used red to deepen the shadows further. Unfortunately the picture I took was blurred.
I coloured her lips. Rosetta always wears bold, red lipstick. I think it suits her personality as a bold woman.
I then coloured her eyebrows which are medium and arched.
I did her eye makeup first. It was fun because I felt like I was doing her makeup for her :D She also had a mole near her lips. I also did some colouring on her neck.
I finally drew her beautiful eyes. She had bold eyes that can be intimidating.
Her neck looks a little aged here but I think it is okay as it is not so obvious.
I drew the outline of her and tried to plan how I will colour it.
She had black hair but I can't just use black alone. So, I used different shades of brown and black. This is halfway colouring her hair. Lighter brown used for highlights while black for shadows.
Here I was done with her whole head.
I gave her a green shrug outerwear.
I coloured her dress in a peachy shade. This is the final outcome. I am happy because she looks very similar to the game version. The game story changes based on choices. In my version, she got a happy ending with her daughter as both agreed to start over.
This is how Madam Rosetta dresses up for her shows. I managed to find a similar bitmoji. Thank you for dropping by and I wish that you have a great day ahead =)
