For a few months now, I have been quite interested in drawing and art. I made it a decision to try and practice very frequently. This time, I decided to wander a bit outside my comfort zone which is actually drawing stuff; not copying, not drawing basic 3D shapes, but actually using my brain and imagination to draw something. Besides, what good would it be I kept learning how to draw and never actually drew anything?
With that, I've decided to draw what I want to draw and stick with it, no matter how bad it turns out.
My subject of today's drawing session is going to be Quote from a game called Cave Story.
Quote is the main character of the game and I'm a fan of his design so I said "why not."
First, I needed to find a reference for a pose to use because I'm not great at imagining poses.
I scrolled through Pinterest to find a suitable pose until I found a decent one. Plus the model was also holding a gun which was a plus.
Now that I had everything I needed - a character and pose reference - I could now begin drawing.
Process
First, I started off with a rough gesture sketch to roughly get the pose down on paper.
Next, I started to roughly sketch out the character's main details and properties on the model.
To be honest, the hardest part of all of this was getting the pistol because:
- I've never drawn a pistol before
- I've never drawn hands holding a pistol before
- I had no idea of how to draw everything without it looking so weird
I also tried drawing the pistol somewhere else before moving to the main thing but unfortunately that did not help much.
As expected, I'm bad at drawing hands. So trying to draw this together with the gun was a nightmare.
This is the final line art:
I was feeling a bit daring so I decided to challenge myself by shading. Including this work, I've only shaded twice so I don't really know what I was doing .
At the same time, I decided to add a few minor details. After everything was done, this was the final result:
I'm not going to lie, it doesn't look so great. There are definitely a few things I got pretty wrongly, but it's alright. Every attempt is a step to getting better.
With enough time and proper practice, I believe that I can improve at art.
Thanks for stopping by and see you later :D
