While looking through old newspapers from the 1930's, I came across this illustration by Ralph Reichhold. He was a famous illustrator for the Pittsburg Press. His illustrations are legendary and many. He was named in the Who's Who in America, 1952-1953 edition. Reichhold was born on November 3, 1884, and passed away january 2, 1989.
While looking at the illustration, it gave me a wierd feeling, knowing that the peaceful tranquility of a smaIl town could be disturbed by bombers in the air. I knew I had to try to add color. So, I grabbed my watercolors and went to work. I found it to be very good practice and challenging. I kinda messed things up with the coloring, but the experience was well worth it.
Going through old newspapers and looking at the old illustration amazes me. It's like looking for lost art from years passed. And I find it a great shame when you look up Ralph Reichhold on the internet very little is found. He is but one of many artist the world has forgotten, who's illustration grazed our papers, giving us something special to contemplate and enjoy.
