Summer Activities

It's Independence Day in America. It's a hot summer day in Texas. I'm pretty sure there are fireworks next town over. This morning, we went to HEB to buy some items to grill.

Mission HEB

We were greeted by one of the surest signs of summer, watermelons. I think anywhere in the USA will associate watermelons with summer.

We picked up some hamburger patties and sausages stuffed with cheese to substitute for hot dogs. Normally, we'd Tex-Mex the barbecue. But it's too hot to be standing outside for that long. Burgers and dogs are quicker.

Queso with Brisket

We also picked up this Tex-Mex Queso with Brisket dip. The kids love this stuff. They'll even put it in their burgers. Good stuff. HEB comes out with some amazing prepared meals you pop in the oven. I love shopping there.

Before sunset, I went out and mowed the lawn. The hot dry summer has helped control the Johnsongrass that went wild in the first months of the year with the frequent rains. I decided to apply some fertilizer and weed control afterwards as there are some rains in the forecast for the weekend. The last thing I want is to have a jungle sprout up again.

We gave up our grill after moving to the coast. We couldn't keep the mold off it. So, we baked bratwurst in the oven. They turn out almost as good, including the browning. Since I come from Milwaukee, bratwurst is a staple for grilling. I'm glad my husband likes them (he's from Ohio and never ate bratwurst until I introduced him to it), because we now have them every time you would typically grill.

I liked brats as a kid. But I never cared for adding sauerkraut. Back in 2006 when I went to work in Wisconsin for a bit, I tried the bratwurst, sauerkraut, and beer trifecta. Heaven.

I've never been one for sauerkraut. My husband, on the other hand, loves it and was used to eating it with ribs.

I don't eat it with anything other than brats.

We opted out of BBQ this year. Instead we went with chili dogs, Frito pie, chips and salsa, apple pie, and watermelon. We spread this out over a few hours which made this eclectic meal work rather well.

Naturally we watched the movie Independence Day and then later on that night Live Free or Die Hard. I think these two movies are solid Independence Day double-feature entertainment.

Your meal reminds me of little league baseball games in West Texas. I used to go watch my cousin play. Frito pie is a staple of concession stands.

Haven’t seen an HEB since I lived in…well…Texas!

North Carolina here now, our fireworks are limited here to the lame ones that burn up on the ground…luckily, I don’t have a long history of buying or DIYing fireworks. Glad to see Texas checking in on the Hive radar though, that was quite unexpected!

Well, you know. It's like a whole other country.

LOL! I know that’s right!
