Fixing an Old Bookshelf

in #hive-1688692 years ago

This weekend I would usually be mixing a new song for #midimonday but an old bookshelf my wife bought from a yardsale got in the way.

Look at this old thing. I had to sand down the broken splinters off the thing.

My wife filled in the dents and divets. I'm wondering if this thing was worth the $5 we paid for it lol.

Here's a nasty splinter getting glued down.

This used to belong to a family with kids. One of them looked like they were learning their letters and wrote their name on the side. The whole reason we bought this thing was to keep our new daughter's books and toys on it.

Now its time to start painting.

First we have to prime it with white paint to hide the dark wood.

I ended up having to put two coats of primer on it. There were too many divets and cracks that soaked up the paint.

Now its time to paint it a color.

This is a subtle change from the white but it will match the wall color.

And its done. It matches the wall and will soon get filled up with oddly shaped children's books. We will let our daughter color and paint this herself if she wants when she gets older. Odds are it will get various crayon and marker scribbles on it as she grows. Then later she can paint over it with a new solid color.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

That is one beautiful set of shelves, @sketch.and.jam ! What a glorious find! Beautiful work on it too: I adore bringing out the best in an old piece of furniture like this: gorgeous!

We'll see how much my daughter ends up drawing on it. I'll direct her to try and make some nice leaf patterns on the front of it with green crayons.

Great project. I just love restoring old furniture like that and seeing it reborn into new life again.

It will become a canvas for crayons and markers eventually lol. Then we can repaint it again.

Nicely done. It's all new now.

Pretty soon I'll have to put all the wall fasteners on the freestanding furniture once my daughters starts walking around. Childproofing will be another DIY project post lol.

Nice work 👍 I love finding hidden details on stuff like the name on the bookcase. I found my great grandpas name etched into an old rocking chair that my grand dad had. My mom didn't know it belonged to him.

Hopefully your grandpa didn't get caught etching his name by your great grandpa lol. Maybe a tradition of family names should be started on it, whoever gets it next has to include their name or initials subtly somewhere.

Great finds! And what a productive weekend transforming it as good and beautiful as new!☺️ Perhaps You're right that cabinet will be soon filled with scribbles and drawings of your daughter. My daughter is in this stage right now and she just loves scribbling and drawing in any part of our house!

Yay! 🤗

It is beautiful! Well done!

It ended up being $5 for the shelf and around $20 for the paint lol.

It was worth it!
