We've been living in the same house for the past 24 years, and as anything else, things deteriorate with time and usage. Our kitchen extractor light was not working properly for quite a while, I replaced it with a portable one, but a few months ago, the switch also broke, and although I was still able to turn it on and off, it was clear we needed to replace the appliance.
I didn't want to hire anyone to do the job so I started looking online for the same model, I ended up picking a slightly bigger and more powerful one from the same manufacturer and same design. Last weekend I decided to install it.
The first thing I had to do was dismantle the old one, and boy, behind that nice clean thing you could find all the grassy internal parts which were quite disgusting. I didn't even feel like shooting a picture of that!
After cleaning the space, I decided I would replace the internal parts instead of cleaning all the greasy ones. After all, they have lasted 24 years, so they deserve to be thrown away :)
One of the things I don't like too much is making holes in the walls, especially on tiled walls, you never know if you will end up uncovering the space in the future, so my idea was to use the same ones. Murphy's law came in to show me, of course, that the new ones did not match the old ones, so I ended up making new holes in the appliance support to use the ones already in the wall.
I then cut a new internal pipe and installed it adding some tape to avoid smoke coming off, and covered the pipe with the corresponding cover, also had to drill new holes in the support to do that and connected the electricity.
Finally, I was able to install the pipe coverage.
After everything was in place I unwrapped the protection layer to get the job finished.
It took me a few hours as I had to deal with some unexpected issues as cleaning the whole space, drilling new holes to be able to use the existing ones in the wall, installing a new internal pipe, and connecting the electricity, of course, the new cord was shorter than the old one. And to be honest, it was not a breathtaking weekend experience 🙂, but it had to be done, and all in all, I am happy to have a new, more powerful extractor ready to cook new meals once my post-surgery diet period ends.
