Awaiting the Post...

in #hive-1688692 years ago

Since COVID, everything's come in the post. I forget what it's like to shop in an actual store. I like it. I never liked shopping - the parking, the saccharine shop assistants, the traipsing all about town with sore feet, the waste of a day. These days, you read a heap of reviews and get what you want. For bigger items I create a 'may by' - a bank I use has a clever saver whereby you enter the URL of the item you want, how much you can afford to pay each week, over how many weeks - and it just sits there and accumulates and even earns interest. When you reach the desire amount, it sends you to the online store whereby you order the item. The beauty of it is that it saves impulse buys as well - Zippay and Afterpay and Pay in 4 are great, but you can still end up overstretched.

So it was this week that my Alton hammock arrived. Totally jumping the gun, of course - the Defender camper is no where near finished, and it'll be a long while before I can tie one rope to the bull bar and one rope to a tree and actually chill for a change. I'm happy - it's super small, and Australia made - a very well thought out and quality bit of kit. Other things arrived this week too - hoses for the Defender, some paintable wallpaper for an upcycle project, and some stackable pans with a click on handle for the camper - good quality, but uses up a lot less space.

So when @galenkp's engagement question asks what item you'd like to come in the post, I struggled to think of something - unless it was a million bucks in a suitcase, I think we have everything covered. I'm not a possessions person, not really. WE try to be minimalist - most stuff we have delivered is stuff we need. And I'm not sure I want to fantasise about the good looking pool boy with a shovel, that'll actually dig us the pool too - I don't think any courier would deliver that kind of thing.

But then there is the disaster, which I haven't told you about yet.

You know that lovely green 130 Defender project I've been updating you on? The one we're making into a camper? THe one of a kind stretch panelvan? Our pride and joy? The one Jamie did a whole nut and bolt restoration on? This one?

Well, the head is - um, broke. It's an AMC head and they aren't meant to do that. But we discovered fuel in the coolant, which is not good at all. Luckily, Jamie's mechanic skills mean it's not quite a write off - if anyone else has a head issue, it'll cost them a bomb at the mechanics, and might even mean they just scrap the car. But Jamie's capable, and all he needs to do is order a new head from the UK, and put it on.

We've been hoping beyond hope that it's not the head, and we already have a brand new set of coolant hoses that arrived today as of course the old ones need replacing, given they have diesel in them.

But of course, the postage from the UK, where we have to order the head from, is slow and expensive. So we're plodding away making the back of the camper, and crying just a little that the engine is no shape for an adventure just yet.

Thus, if we could wish for anything to arrive in the post, it's that. A brand new AMC head, ready to put on, so our Defender 130 is something to be super proud of. Of course, it would be better if it arrived all expenses paid, too.....

With Love,

An all expenses paid AMC head is the best sort of head.

Yeah, the money is a bummer. I heard a joke the other day that Landrovers are like hookers, they only work if you keep throwing money at them. Seems about right, although the joke felt vaguely wrong...

I've heard the same which is why I've stayed away from them. Great vehicles, no doubt, but they suck up money.

Oh, engine things were something my husband dreaded! But he'd set out to find the required parts, used if possible, and do the work. Except for the tranny in the truck, that was too much for him and he never did anything about that. I ended up paying a fortune to get it done when it finally went last year.

I hope you guys can manage to get the head...

The transmission isn't easy! Mechanics charge a LOT .. well the garages do, here mechanics don't get paid a lot.

Rotten roll of the dice needing a head. I wonder if it’s the gasket doing it? Just a thought! Wishful thinking perhaps lol.

Love doing projects like that, one of these days when we get a bit of property I’ll certainly be undertaking something like that! We too want to have something to do some camping in and driving around so it would be nice to get something and restore it a bit.

I enjoy perusing around a store to see if there’s anything I want. My wife is more the online shopper and there’s always a package coming to the door lol

Ha do you say 'what have you ordered NOW??'

Nah the gasket was full replaced. He rebuilt the whole engine.

Lol sometimes, our neighbors make fun of her a bit!

There should be a type of postage thats the opposite of postal due. Like here's your package and a couple of hundred dollars postage rebate? refund? bonus bucks? 🤔 That would be nice. I had an old Volvo XC70 with a cracked head. It was cracked when I bought it used. Had about 150k miles on it. I drove it a couple of years and sold it with the head still cracked. But that was a runabout town car. I would never have taken it on a long road trip.

It's amazing how some cars just keep on going!

I like the idea of a rebate.

Based on what I am seeing in the photo, the interior is not finished yet. But it is already nice looking, what's more, if it is already finished.

Still lots of work to be done !

I'm sorry I'm not up-to-date with the Defender. I have no idea what an AMC head is haha. But I hope it arrives soon 🤞

Sorry I have been a bit absent. I hope you are doing fine. I saw that you have become a grandmother though, wow 🙂

xx

It's pretty exciting! He is a sweetheart..

I haven't followed the story of your 130 Defender, but I like what you bought, the Alton Hammock. I'm looking for that one in our local area, too. Not for camping, but just to relax at home.

Oh yes we have a hammock for home too. Now the weather is getting better I might even sit in it...

Nice weekend post, enjoy your orders.

Bummer about the head, whatever that is. That thing is soooo going to have been worth the wait though. I hope the part arrives soon!

Oh we can't wait til it's done. We made good progress yesterday.... But it's a long project!

The internet says

The upper part of the engine is called the cylinder head, while the lower part is the engine block. The cylinder head sits on the engine and closes off the combustion chamber.

I like the anti-impulse software you use, that sounds like a wonderful budgeting tool! I can absolutely agree on celebrating more things becoming available online, as the trend of online shopping holds strong while Covid simmers down. Sans one thing- thrift stores. I'll thrift shop any day lol!

Wishing I could send you the pool boy, or at least the part you need 😂 Thanks for the interesting post! !PIZZA

Thanks @grindan ! I wrote a story this week too which could be more to your liking than a boring post about stuff arriving in the post he he...

Oh I know that if anyone can fix it J can, hoping it all goes smoothly and that ye get to enjoy lots of adventures n her soon. She's looking real good too xxxx

It's going to look so amazing. We've had barely any time to do her. Hopefully he ordered the part today actually, I thought he had but men can be so bad at organising shit.

I still find receiving something in the post (or from a courier - no one uses post much here and the courier is cheaper) somehow feels like a GIFT. A SURPISE. Despite my head knowing that I paid for it. LOL...

I'm not a fan of shops much - the western kind especially - or malls. But give me a market and face-to face with the growers and the makes and it's a whole different deal.

Ironically I'm waiting for a courier delivery as I'm typing this comment. A dinky little clothesline for travel that I bought for Ploi - to take to her in NL.

Despite my head knowing that I paid for it.

Oh yeah for sure. LIke 'for me? You shouldn't have, me!'

Sounds like a handy travel line, I've had my eyes on this one for a while...

but only coz instagram throws it up in my feed, like some psychic bastard who knows I like gadgety things though I never buy them coz they are NEVER as good as they look!

This is stupid simple. It hooks back onto itself with a little s hook. Stops everything bunching in the middle & makes sure air can move between the clothes. Doubles as an extra wardrobe rack and can loop on anything - fenceposts, trees, shower stall frame etc.. $3.
