Tree limb falls in the middle of the night, does anyone hear it? No, but I sure did see it the next morning. Ouch. before repair
So this is a small dilemma, van is 15 years old and not worth very much. But it runs great, and it hauls people, dogs and tools like nobody's business. I love the stow-n-go seats, you can put them in floorboard and slide in a full sheet of plywood. And both the heat and air work like a champ. I decided to invest the least amount of money to keep it legal (working headlights and turn signals) and cosmetically presentable (new hood).
(after repairs)
Total cost was a little under $500 for two new housing light units and the hood. Installation time was 35 minutes and required two people. Prior experience in doing this - none.
Step one: There are three screws that hold the headlamp assembly unit in place. Use a 8 mm socket to remove the screws. Slide the assembly forward. Save the screws.
Step 2: Unfasten the wiring harness from the headlamp assembly unit. There are two clips to unfasten the wiring.
Step 3: Unbox new headlamp light assembly unit. Fasten wiring harness onto unit. Slide unit into place and insert the three screws with a 8 mm socket.
I installed headlamp assemblies on both sides. Each had broken glass and damaged bulbs.
Onto the HOOD!
Step 1: Call a friend to hold it for you.
Step 2: Unscrew the four bolts on the two hinges of the hood. These are 10 mm bolts. Remove the hood latch at the front of the hood. Remove weather stripping from the front of the hood. Use a flat head screw driver to pry the small clips up on the weather stripping.
Step 3: Give the hood to your friend so he can make a shield with it.
Step 4: Put the new hood in place. Tighten the four bolts on the hinges. Install the hood latch in the front and the weatherstripping.
Step 5: Close Hood and Drive home happy! We plan to paint the hood in the future. I have a simple method of painting that should look pretty good. Stay tuned!
If you would like a few more photos of the installation, let me know in comments and I can add them. In case you were wondering, there is still a dent in the fender. I plan to repair the dent when I paint.
