Travel the World of Postage Stamps - Birds are the protector of the forest - European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) - USSR, Soviet Union 1979 - Michel USSR 4887 - my hobby.
Greetings friends!
Today, I want to present to you the last postage stamp from the series Birds are the protector of the forest. issued in 1979 in the USSR.
This postage stamp depicts a very interesting bird, a night hunter - European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus).
It is difficult to call him a hunter, rather, it is a fisherman who has spread his nets and waits for prey to fall into them, lol.
The nightjar has a huge mouth similar to that of a toad, which it opens like a trap that nocturnal insects fall into.
There is one more resemblance to a toad, the nightjar's singing resembles the sound that toads make in a pond in the evening.
Nightjar is a master of disguise and the chances of you seeing him on the branches of trees are very small.
Once, when I was eight or nine years old, I don’t remember exactly, I found a fledgling nightjar chick near a cypress on an alley leading towards the beaches in the Crimean city of Sudak.
I tried to feed the chick with various insects, but he was very weak, perhaps he had been without food for a long time and, unfortunately, he died.
This was my only encounter with a bird, apart from the fact that its image is kept in my collection of postage stamps.
This postage stamp received a face value of 15 kopecks of the USSR and a circulation of 5,700,000 copies.
Let's take a look at this postage stamp.
