The layers of clothing weighed Vanneta down. Perspiring, she quickly pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her neck, then glanced both ways down the street. She'd just exited the bus stop. Her next steps would be to cross the street and deposit her backpack onto the short concrete barrier. Finally, she would wait for the second leg of transit to her job at the local fast-food restaurant three miles away. In front, across the divide, emptiness encompassed the length of the street. Internally, she felt this angst, knowing it extended beyond. The perils this day would bring, if she lingered too long on this particular street, were real and frightening.

Reaching into her backpack, she retrieved an pocket-sized bible. Opening it, she turned, as she normally did, to one of her favorite scriptures while she waited.

She knew the width and breath of the neighborhood since childhood. The businesses, tired of dealing with vulgar graffiti defacing their property, crime, and gang activity, had long given up operations and moved to more safer, environmentally-friendly locations.

Overwhelmed as usual, she held her breath as long as she could. She slipped a pill from the backpack. The mint lip gross inhaled through the handkerchief provided some relief from the stench of the railway yard nearby. Odors from discarded garbage and decay added to her nausea.

Interrupting her thoughts, the cue came into her earplug. The second film crew would be rounding the corner in two minutes.

Vanetta prayed all would go well as she hung her head low, pretending to listen to music. The action would happen quickly.

"CUT." The director waved off the camera. "Perfect."

At the end of the take, Vanetta lay dead, having fallen off the concrete barrier to the sidewalk below from a fatal gunshot wound that originated from inside a moving vehicle. An innocent victim in the wrong place as gang members ran away down the alley. One of the passengers in the vehicle jumped from the car and grabbed her backpack. As the car speed off, no sirens could be heard rushing to Vanetta's aid.

She hopped into the van and tore off the ragged clothing. The assistant in charge handed her a cold drink. She eased her head back onto the couch and closed her eyes.

Yes, she was shot and killed that day waiting for the transit. But she would rise and go home unharmed. She would go home to her new, modest apartment.

Her family and neighbors couldn't.

Looking back, the realities of her life came into perspective. It was her raw talent and street-wise savvy that landed her one of the "extra" spots available at the local agency. She knew her chances in the film industry were slim. So, she accepted the work as an outlet to secure a decent living for herself. Better in her thinking than working at the local burger franchise. Happy she didn't have to pay guild dues as a background actor, she could focus on helping her family.

Another year working, and she would be able to relocate family who desired to leave.

But that didn't help others in the neighborhood. Tugging at her heart was the short film's portrayal of her true upbringing. The top layer of the troubled lives of many who endured the daily torment of undeveloped neighborhoods with no prospects of improvement.

The reality of sitting and minding your own business could be fatal as drive-by killings had become commonplace. To lose your life through no fault of your own posed a real and present danger as you hurried about your daily tasks.

She glanced out the van window surveying neglected streets and abandoned houses. Depravity blanketed the area. Her recent exposure to the outside world the past year enlightened her on the issues she hadn't even realized that plagued her neighborhood and others like it.

She wasn't as naive not to understand the cause and effect.

How best to use my talent to help revive the area from gang influence and poverty filled her thoughts. So many others in the industry could have done the same all these decades. Why hadn't more solutions been sought? What was the purpose of the wealthy and well-connected if not to use it to uplift others?

But can one person truly make enough difference? she pondered.

She realized that just throwing money into a situation wouldn't solve it unless there existed a concerted effort to change people's attitudes and perspectives. Not only that, a viable avenue to provide resources and revitalization to return industry and provide for a decent standard of living would be required.

Silently, she rode back to the studio praying that if she should "make it", she wouldn't abandon these thoughts and feelings at that moment as she moved away from the area that defined her childhood.

Welcome back to my freewrite prompt story for this week. The photo that is the subject of the story spoke to me about a person who looks dejected for whatever reason as she sits by herself on the edge of a building's concrete barrier.

Describe what you see.
A woman sits on a concrete raised slab with her head down. A large black backpack sits against the edge of the building. The building near where she sits looks empty. Graffiti marks the side of the bilding. A wooden traffic sign lies broken amidst other debri on the sidewalk behind her. The story's side entrance is littered with trash.

Describe what you feel.
Although the sun is shining as the reflective shadow on the opposite side of the street indicates, I feel the woman's demeanor suggests she is sad. She could, however, be looking down at her phone or perhaps reading. She is waiting for something, perhaps, a bus to take her to her destination. Or perhaps she is waiting for someone to pick her up.

Write a story or poem about what you think is going on. I leave with you my story for: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 2/2/24.

A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 2/2/24.

With the description of that neighborhood, it seems as if you were describing many cities and towns in my country. Living in hostile and adverse conditions is hopeless. All that remains is resilience and faith in God. Great story. Greetings @justclickindiva

Hello @sirenahippie. Like your country, in the backdrop of the U.S. lies the often purposeful unspoken and unseen conditions of impoverished neighborhoods in a majority of large and small cities. Poor living conditions, street violence, childhood hunger, and homelessness prevail.

Individuals often move farther away in attempts to distance themselves from the problems. But nightly on news channels, we are reminded of the effects these underlying issues cause. After decades, the situation doesn't seem to have diminished.

Thanks so much for your visit, lovely compliment for my story, and engagement. I appreciate your recommendation for support. Take care and have a nice rest of your week.

I think every country and city can boast of neighbourhoods like this. You capture the bleakness perfectly with your vivid descriptions. I've been to places like this and the social inequalities and injustices prevalent there are heartbreaking. So I understand Vanneta's predicament.

She's an admirable character. She's resilient, focused and resourceful; determined to get her loved ones out of the neighborhood while also concerned for residents there. This shows her selflessness. Not everyone would think like that. In places like this, it's survival for the fittest or the most cunning. Beautifully written as always! !LADY 💕

You are correct. A varying degree of social inequality and injustice exist in all country, and no country is immune to the effects that are caused by these underlying issues. How the issues are handled is the key. In the U.S., we have our share. As I's reiterated, throwing money at the problem is not the complete solution. For example, child poverty and hunger still exist after many decades of fighting this issue. We need more of individuals like my character who understands this and vows to do her part in finding a solution.

Thanks so much for your visit and thorough analysis of my story. I appreciate it, your lovely compliment, and support.

Take care and have a nice rest of your week.

It will be hard to change a neighbourhood like that esp. because it can't be done all at the same time plus those in games will lose the power.

Let's hope she makes it.

Yes, it will be difficult to change because the resources even if available will never be distributed equally so that those in need will actually benefit from it. At the same time, attitudes and mindsets need to change also in a positive direction. We've witnessed this with poverty and homelessness. Nothing seems to change after numerous decades of dealing with it in a variety of ways.

Thanks so much for your visit. I appreciate it and your engagement. Take care.

I learned that there are homeless who prefer to keep it that way, it will be the same for gangs. Perhaps it works if it's street by street.
I know some cities removed entire areas and build new houses for ... the wealthy.

The question is what happened to those who once lived there?

I remember in a large city near us, supposedly a huge warehouse covering several blocks was to be erected to house the homeless to move them away from the downtown area where the sports arenas were. Not helping, just shoving them into the background.

Also, the same thing happened with eminent domain used to build townhomes for the wealthy. Where did the former residents relocate?

I've read many reasons why the problems can't be solved. Not one positive moves to actually solve the problems permanently. I don't believe there is a solution. As you say, there are numerous people, and I've seen reports, who prefer to live this way for whatever reason.

Thanks for the engagement and support. I appreciate it.

One told me he rather lives this way then paying child support for his daughter, some can simply not live in a house with neighbours and all, rules, restrictions and so on. It also will be hard to start being part of society after year's of living on the streets... Indeed so many people and so many needs. Perhaps it's a good start to provide in homes, tiny homes for those who are homeless with jobs, like to have a place to live. But each one of them needs support.

🍀❤️

Thanks for the good talk.

The likes of Vanetta are for change in a neighbourhood ridden with crime and violence but she alone won't be able to, because there are Powers that be, who thrive by situations like this.
A very beautiful story.

Yes, you are correct @edith-4angelseu in that numerous individuals with personal stakes in keeping situations exactly in a certain condition reap rewards for doing so. I feel that the task of revitalization is a massive undertaking that must be addressed on different government levels with private input.

Thanks so much for stopping by and engaging with my story. I appreciate it.

Vanetta found a way to improve her life but although she escaped from the place she grew up it will always be a part of her. It's good to realize that. Perhaps she cannot save everyone but make a start.

The movie angle was genius :) I have a feeling that she's going to do great things in her life!

I have a feeling that the young lady will succeed and become one who will help change the landscape. She has the desire. All she needs now is the right connections and resources. Sadly, her chances are slim as we see in everyday life not too far from our own neighborhoods.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate it. I'm pleased you liked the movie angle. I wanted to try a different approach to the poverty portrayed in the image.
