Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary & Quang Nam Temples In Vietnam from the 4th century

in #hive-1470582 years ago

Heading towards temples built in the 4th century out of clay bricks, the road is paved, long hot and filled with a few people I met along the way.

Let out at a spot we walk around and walk a bit of the site that are still intact.

Built during the 4th and 14th century by the king of Champa to the The Hindu God Shiva. These monuments stood 70 building strong in its prime.

There are many engravings that have been studies over the years. I am not specifically sure if all the engravings have been translated nd where that type of works progress is going. I do know the community is preserving this area nd rebuilding temples there were destroyed.

Destroyed, yes, 70 temples stood. Now there are only 20 remaining. The few that are still standing have quite the amount of text engraved into the bricks.
The ornate details of the work is a marvel.

During the end of the Vietnam war as the United States were leaving the country bombs were dropped on much of the key infrastructure, temples, community spaces, and anything of value was bombed. I guess it is cheaper to drop the bombs then bring them back for the next attacks on a some other country that may need capitalisms dropped liked devastation into their society.

It is hard to fathom how this society is said to not have had the ability to shape metal....It is perplexing to see that ornate details of engraving. Yet, to be told one theory of humanity and yet see something different with my own eyes, is perplexing, and I know what I will see.

How is stone carved without a harder item to remove rock?
Maybe they used water, as the rain has degraded this statue.

In the temples there are is a large volume of text in Cham and Sanskrit. To see so close a far off civilization makes one think of how important their words must have been to carve them into rock.

Here are a few more pictures of the area.

This place is a wonderland for beautiful colours juxtapositions of soft and hard lines along the depth and placement of each building.
I did not know a bombed out ruined could be so strong in its presence even having been destroyed and less then one quarter its former glory.

A Panoramic of the area

My Son Temple in Vietnam is a must check out place if you are interested in culture history architecture humanity and the like. Make sure to bring respect as this is seen as a holy place for people of the appropriate faith. Lets all embrace the beauty diversity and question old civilisations bring to us from afar and lets remember that what they did back then effects and affects us today.

These pictures were taken at the Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary in the province of Quang Nam 69km southwest from the city of Da Nang. Have you been here, have you explored the area outside your back door?

  • Thanks for having a look at a day wandering around history so close I can touch it and yet so removed I cannot read what is written. The journey will continue as the road is long and goes on for ever.

Check out Pinmapple for my map of places that I have been and will go back to in time.
