Stand mixer

As I showed last week, I got this stand mixer for Christmas and I yet had to test it. We were constantly eating other things and then I’d finally have the kitchen cleared and no desire to bake anything so the mixer was left unused until yesterday. Then my daughter requested me to make playdough for her. I bought a kg of salt as well as food colouring months ago but totally forgot that I said I’d make it for her. She didn’t ask for it until yesterday so I had to dig into the food colouring and get kneading. I really didn’t feel like it though and defo not having that stuff under my nails as I had them extended before Christmas, but I promised… Then my boyfriend threw the idea at me to use the stand mixer as I have it anyway, lol.

Chocolate mouse test

I figured I’d first use it for something else to experience how the mixer works first and pulled out a few bags of chocolate mousse I still had in the cabinet. This wouldn’t get too messy so it would be an easy clean up before starting with the sticky playdough mix. Turns out that the mousse comes out a lot more firm using the stand mixer than with the hand mixer I normally use, so that was a good start.

Time for playdough

At this point I had no doubt that I’d get this playdough out much faster than when I use my hands to knead it. Clean nails were a nice bonus. Or weren’t they? I looked up which hook to use to mix it and I read it should be the flat one, so I used the flat one. I measured it as per usual, the recipe is super simple 1:2 and a few spoons of vegetable oil, can’t mess it up really, and so this went right every time. Except this time, sigh. I don’t know what the issue was, maybe it’s me messing up the hook after all even though I read this online, or another order of mixing when using the stand mixer, I don’t know, I only know this was not what I signed up for. You can see in the last image how sticky it was exactly. The colour looks very nice, I wish it was an icing haha.

What a mess!

It was so hard to even get out of the bowl, so heavy and sticky that I was highly annoyed wasting my time on this using the mixer. I will just do it by hand next time as I would have been done 4x without all the heavy cleanup of the bowl added. I ended up digging in with my hands and adding a lot of flour to get it to the point my daughter could use it for claying. I had to ask my boyfriend to finish the job as my neck and shoulders wouldn’t have it anymore, what a mess! But at least it ended up as clay, not sure how long it will be ok to use though with all the extra flour in it, at least now I know not to use the mixer next time. That thing is awesome, but not for this purpose.

Today I will make my first banana bread batter in it and maybe tiramisu if I still feel like it. This should be good!
