Having goats on my homestead for me was one of the best decisions I made. Not only do they provide high quality raw milk but they are just so much easier to manage compared to having a dairy cow. I also get many products from the goats such as raw milk, cheese, soaps and lotion.
Back when I got chickens I knew I wanted a rooster so I could be as self-sufficient as possible. That’s now also the case with my goats.
I now have a buck who I featured in a few of these pictures. He’s the most calm and cool goat ever! Yes, he does stink a bit which is often an issue many people talk about when getting a male goat. They pee on themselves to attract the girls lol But I find it to not be all that bad.
I have him separated from the girls right now but he’s not alone. I also have a wether (a castrated male goat) to keep him company. Honestly that one is the biggest pain haha
Later this month (November) or early December I’ll start having the girls and him free range together and let nature take its course. Goats have their babies in around 150 days which means babies in the early spring, perfect for the milking season. I don’t want to be out in the freezing dead of winter milking my goats daily.
Have you thought about owning goats or have them?
