Wild-Harvested Apple Leather: A Healthy & Delicious Snack (Recipe Included)

in #hive-14643117 days ago

One enjoyable way to preserve foraged apples is by making apple leather. This healthy snack is not only simple to prepare but also packed with natural sweetness and goodness.

With the price of commercial fruit leather climbing, making it at home is a great solution. Not only is it easy and cost-effective, but it also gives you control over the ingredients so you can avoid added sugars and preservatives.

Around this time, the apples are very ripe. Once the frost hits, most of them will fall to the ground.

I picked a basketful to make apple leather. This snack is loved by everyone—it's chewy, tangy, sweet, and nutritious!

🍏🍎
Here's how I make it.

Homemade Apple Leather Recipe

Ingredients:

6-8 medium-sized apples (variety of your choice, sweet or tart).

Honey, maple syrup, or sugar, depending on the sweetness of your apples. (optional)

2 tablespoons lemon juice (to enhance flavour and prevent browning)

1 teaspoon Cinnamon or any preferred spice (optional for added flavour)

Instructions:

Wash and core the apples, removing any blemished parts.
Cut them into quarters or slices; there's no need to peel them, as the skin adds flavour and nutrients.

Place the apple slices in a large pot with a little water (about 1/2 cup) to help them steam and soften.
Cook over medium heat until the apples are soft and tender, about 15-20 minutes.

Once the apples are cooked, transfer them to a blender or food processor. Add lemon juice, sweetener (if using), and cinnamon.
Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity if necessary.

Pour the apple mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

Spread it evenly to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
Ensure the edges are slightly thicker to prevent them from drying out too quickly.

Put in the dehydrator for 6-8 hours at 60-75°C. Check periodically until the apple leather is no longer sticky to touch and peels away easily from the parchment.

If using an oven:
Preheat your oven to the lowest setting (around 140-170°F or 60-75°C).
Place the baking sheet in the oven and slightly prop the door open to allow moisture to escape.

Once dried, let it cool completely.

Peel the apple leather off the parchment paper.

Cut it into strips.

Or roll them up for easy snacking.

You can store the apple leather in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to a month. For longer storage, you can freeze it.

Perfect for on-the-go snacking!

Have a lovely day, everyone.

That's so cool. I lvoe foraging and turning it into something that feels 'commerical' like this. I also like making membrillo for gifts, or aCV.

Thank you, yes I love making membrillo too and mmmm... What a great idea for gifts, though the quinces around I use for membrillo didn't bear fruits. x

You can make an apple cheese instead, sorry I did mean that rather than membrillo as you were talking about apples but I got distracted!

Ohhh great idea, I will do. Thank you. 🥰

Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of definitely not tried apple leather. So, it’s basically dehydrated apple sauce - interesting.

Yes a dehydrated apple sauce, the flavour is concentrated and texture comparable to jelly babies. It melts as you chew. Yum yum 😋

Well, you're in for a yummy treat. Definitely worth a trying. 😋💚

Great share @theworldaroundme!

Thanks 😊

I'm learning and new to social media and content creation. Thanks for the support. Much appreciated. 😊

Well, this is something new for me, thank you.

How long the drying in oven takes?

@tipu curate

Wow that's good, worth the try. It takes 6-8 hours, it can be longer, depending on the thickness of the purée. Good.luck. you're welcome. 😊

And Thank you.

So, it's roughly the same as in the dryer, of course :)

Thanks, will try it out.

I know this type of desserts - in Georgia (where I was born), they cook such things from different fruits - love them.

As always, the post is beautiful and inspiring to cook, eat, and go out :D

Congratulation on that amazing share on Reddit!!!

It is not an uncommon dessert or treat, but few people know about it. Yes, you can cook any type of fruit.

Thank you for directing me and introducing Hiveposh; I wish Hiveposh would give a referral fee if you introduce someone. :)

I wish Hiveposh would give a referral fee

Thank you for this 😊 Hive blockchain's growth is the best referral fee for me. Great sharable content like yours and visitors from Reddit can help make Hive stronger. Not just words: the more HP I have, the more I worry about the future of this blockchain. I would like Hive to exist and thrive forever but it won't be that if everyone does nothing.

That's very true, but not all think like you do. I like hive too and am pleased to contribute to its growth. Helping others, helping hive. 😊

Just on a business growth point of view- a referral fee in small amounts can contribute to a very fast growth.

I used this technique in a healthcare recruitment agency to start the ball rolling and it does work like a treat. . It is only done at limited time to get people in circulation and referrals only given if the person has achieved certain requirements, But I guess the tokens and Rewards are already an incentive, although it can also be acquired in different ways. 🩷😊

Yes, the referral system can be helpful. I had some good experiences with it either.

Wow! You come up with the most genius posts and recipes. I am constantly inspired by what you do and share. So glad that you found HIVE!!

Thank you, dearest @Caledulacraft. I love to share and am pleased that you like them and inspire you. I am also glad I found this friendly community. 😊💗
